CHEM- CONNECT REFLECTIONS

Chemistry is often tagged by many as one of the most difficult and abstract subjects. Oftentimes, there are some who opine negative ideas and misconceptions about Chemistry and many are unaware of the significance and practical applications of this subject to daily life activities.  With Chem- connect project, it is expected that the people of the community as well as the students should be able to recognize and appreciate the practical applications/ contributions of Chemistry to their daily lives.

Objectives:

1.      Facilitate the flow of ideas between chemistry and society using students as mediators
2.      Develop the communication skills of the students through promotion of various chemistry products
3.      Promote public understanding of chemistry among the people of the community
4.      Appreciate the contributions of chemistry to daily life activities
5.      Use technology as collaborative tool in the exchange of ideas

  1. Chem connect project is very helpful to us, in the people in the community and in our home.we learn from here about that with out this chemical bonding weak forces and molecular geometry al matter or things in the earth are gasses.
    In our home we aplly the like desolves like, in cooking before we put the oil in the pan we make sure that ta pan has no water bacause it is possible that the water go out in the pan and spread.
    In community it helps people to conserve matter and to do works in short time with out espending money like the charcole paste.
    Its material use are charcole and corn starch.
    First heat or boild the corn starch with water and wait until it become sticky.
    When the starch is ready wrapped it in the dusted charcole.
    And when it dries it is reade to use.
    Its porpose is to ignite the chopped wood quickly in cooking or it is use as panggatong.

    Chem Connect project is very helpful to us.It makes us love chemestry more and understand more about chemestry. May natutunan ka na nakatulong ka pa.

  2. As a student of Tabaco National High School I am very glad and honored to become one of the student chosen to perform the chem Connect project. For me it is a wonderful opportunity to enhance many aspect of my life as well as to help other people on how they can have a better understanding about chemistry. We share some practical application that can help them to have a better and progressive life. One of those is the mango shake , which we all see as an ordinary beverage. But it is a product of chemistry, which is a kind of mixture .These practical applications are based on our theoretical knowledge and the product of chemistry and what we have learned in school. As we go on with the cem connect project, I learned that we must know how to manage and communicate with the community that we are handling. But even though we have some difficulties that we are facing we are able to overcome it by the help of our chemistry teacher who is there, always to correct and help us for our some mistakes. This project I have joined in, is not just only for my consumption but its main goal is to promote chemistry by means of helping the community in a way that we introduce product that are being produce by means of simple chemical processes. This project enable the people to increase the lively hood and financial aspect of their lives . I hope that even I helped them in simple way , the result is much productive and useful.   3. Reflection on Chemconnect Project

    We had our second community service in Tayhi barangay hall with our guide teacher, Mrs. Collantes. We were 15 facilitators. We did again what we did during our first community service in Pawa. Since we did it again, I will enumerate the applications we made and the importance of chemistry in that application. First, the organic hand sanitizer. The sanitizer had a bit problem because it has a foul smell but then that sanitizer can lessen our expenses and it is also organic than the sanitizers bought on department stores. The other on is the tie dye of the t-shirt, the design was not properly printed for the tying of the rubber band was wrong. The charcoal balls were perfectly made for it was too easy. Those balls can be used as a coal but it lights than the normal coal. The mango shake was fine, the taste of it was sweet. The children there in Tayhi answered some questions and those who got correct answers got a glass of mango shake. The handmade gel was also fine. James,who did explain the application, tried the gel and fortunately,it worked. The gel is just very easy to made so kids or teenager boys can apply that to lessen their expense in buying a gel in the store.
    The participants-the kids, were very happy for they learned some applications on chemistry that were very easy and can lessen their expenses. The Chemconnect project was successful for the facilitators and the participant got along well and we were united as one.

  4. I'm so proud to be part of this wonderful project. I fell very happy when me, myself did something that helps the people to discover what or how to use such very important things in which we all had in our surroundings. Like water in which it is very important in our daily living. Without water, we will be dehydrated, in which it may cause death. Also, there is Oxygen. Without oxygen we cannot breathe a refreshing air that may also cause death. And other things that is important in our daily lives, in our community, and of course in our universe.

    It is like when we have a community service in a barangay which is the Barangay of Pawa and Tayhi in which we share some very important applications in Chemistry that may ar will be important in our daily lives. One of those is The Homemade Gel which is performed by our classmate named James. Instead of buying gel from the market, you can make a HOMEMADE GEL by yourself and can help you to save up your money. Also, there is the Mango Shake Which is performed by our classmates also named Patrick.

    I am very thankful of being part of such an amazing project in which I have a chance to help many people to conserve and to use very carefully the things that is just there in our surroundings. It also helps myself to know better about our world, our nature and about Chemistry. Kenneth Cañeta

  5. My Reflection On The CHEM-CONNECT Project

    When the CHEM-CONNECT Project was first launched, Sir Reyes said that we will be having a community service in our respective barangays namely; Pawa, Panal, Cobo, and San Vicente. I felt so much happiness because by this, I will be able to apply and share the learning brought to us by this very knowledgeable project. Sir explained the things that we will be doing in the said project. We applied the things that we learned from the seminar that we have attended which greatly contributed to the success of the project. We have learned many alternatives which are considered useful to everyday lives of people.
    Barangay Cobo, was the barangay which we have conducted our CHEM-CONNECT project. I, and my 12 other classmates were accompanied by Ma'am Biron. The residents welcomed us wholeheartedly and participated actively. The alternatives we applied includes the gel, made from aloe vera extract and lemon; the glue, rolled in pulverized charcoal that can be used in making fire, the mango shake which has a very nutritive value in our body and the jelly-like ball, made from glue and food coloring which was very elastic when touched. Each of the activities done were facilitated by us. They were very happy even the barangay officials were impressed by the results of the experiments that we taught to the residents.
    I am really glad to be part of CHEM-CONNECT because by this, I was able to learn many amazing things that can serve as an alternative to different expensive and extravagant products. And not only that, I was able to share it to other people so that they can also apply and use it into their everyday living. They are more affordable, healthier, and cheaper but very productive and useful. CHEMISTRY is indeed everywhere around us. Now I know that even the smallest of things has their own unique usage.
    Who knows? Maybe they are earning money now by the things we have taught to them.

  6. As a student of Tabaco National High School who undertake Chem-connect , I am happy because Chem-connect really helps me as a student, as a resident in the community. Through Chem-connect I learned so many things that are dangerous yet very helpful. We know that Sodium and Chlorine itself is very dangerous but when this two combine it forms are very useful substance , that is Table salt.
    So as i learn through this Project , I also share my learnings in the community. When we have the community service in Pawa and Tayhi, Tabaco City , I presented my alternative product for the gel, that is my Homemade Gel. This Homemade Gel is not very expensive we just need salt water and shampoo and we can create this Homemade Gel. So many resident in the community can earn money through this gel because it is not very expensive.
    So , I am very happy to be part of this Project because by this , I am able to learn many things that can be made useful even though it is small or it is big

  8. My Reflection
    First of all, the chem.-connect project is about helping us understand and love chemistry. It helps us know some practical application that will help us in our daily living. It also helps the community to know some application that will help them earn a living.
    This chem.-connect project let me understand and love chemistry. This makes my understanding about chemistry easy for I found it fun and every time there is an experiment, I am exploring new ideas and I have some questions that the teacher immediately explained. It also helps me know some practical application. This practical application helps me in my daily living. For example is the charcoal made of cornstarch. This is a long-lasting charcoal for when I used it today; I can still use it tomorrow and the other day. It is also easy to be lighted. With this charcoal, I can save money for I am not going to buy charcoal everyday. The last is that it helps me to promote some practical application in our community. With this, it can help them earn a living. One example of it is natural mango shake. It can be their business for it is more delicious than the mango shake made of powder. Aside from it, it is healthier for it is made from the mango fruit. They can also substitute the mango of different fruit like banana, avocado, etc. with this, their not just earning but they are also helping the costumer to become healthy.
    I am so thankful to this chem.-connect project for it helps me a lot. It helps me understand and love chemistry. It also helps me know some practical application that helps me save money and lastly, it helps the community earn a living and make the costumer healthy. That’s why, I am very thankful to the chem.-connecting project.

    As a student of Tabaco National High School,our section had been chosen to conduct the Chem-Connect Project in which we are allow to have a community service and share what we learned from our Chemistry Subject and How we can apply it to our daily Life. It is an honor for us to conduct this kind of project in which as a teenager,we can help for the improvement and more upgraded community.There are many things i learned,As a human,we should know how to give importance for what help us to live. The important things that help us to live in this world. One important thing is chemical bonding. Chemical Bonds are used in creating chemical Compounds. Chemical Compounds are important as Chemical Substances are mostly made by it.The different types of chemical bonds determine the physical properties of the compounds that they create.
    Chemical Compounds made by Chemical bonds help make the body function as it does.For example,Stomach cannot function the food that we eat. Also with the use of Chemical Bonds,we can create chemical compounds that allow us to produce new substance. These substance can use in technology, Medicine and products.
    Overall,with the use of these substance,we can advance into the future of Chemistry and science. It help us in our everyday life even we are not aware of it. Without Chemical bonds,life would be completely different.Chemical Bonds are what hold the world together.
    Through the Chem-Connect Project,i learned those things above and as I've said ,i am so thankful that it gives me the way to know how does it help us and what is it for us.Because of this, i am able to give importance for everything,can or cannot see by our naked eyes.

    CHEM-CONNECT Project -Significance
    Being part of this Project is an honor for us especially we, as a teenagers. This Chem Connect project is one way of making the part of the community more productive. This helps every one of us to know the used of different things especially those that we as a human are not aware of.As part of this project we are very thankful that we learned different practical applications that we can use in our daily life.This Practical applications are very significant as it help us to be more productive or using things to be more useful.that even we see it everyday,we are not aware that it can be a big pat of our life,that it can help us to improve what our life is before. By the help of this Chem-Connect project,,we can learn such important things that can be used to earn money. We are not aware that even if its a small thing,it can be used to earn money and with that small thing, it can change our life to be better and successful
    living.
    Through this, not only our self, our community but i think our country can be successful if each of us can be part of this Project. That what we learned can also teach to others so that all of us can be a part of a better Country.

  11. First of all I would like to thank Mr. Ronaldo Reyes, our teacher, because he introduces to us CHEM – CONNECT. I learn so many things because of this project. We conducted community service, scavenger hunt and experiment that are very useful to us.

    World doesn’t exist without chemistry. I totally understand the importance of chemistry because of the lessons about Chemical Bonding, Polarity of Substance, Molecular Geometry and Intermolecular Force. In Chemical Bonding, I learn that there are two types of it --- Ionic Bond and Covalent Bond. In Polarity of Substances, I learn that it only occurs in non-metal (covalent) and there are two types --- Polar and Non-polar. In Intermolecular Force, I learn that there are three types --- London Dispersion Forces, Dipolar Forces and Hydrogen Bonding. Knowing the different types of bond and forces, we can determine the structure, boiling point and other determinants of substance.

    Community service is very useful to daily life. For example charcoal paste, we can still use the small pieces of charcoal than throwing away by making it as a ball of charcoal. Another example is sanitizer. Out of alcohol, alovera and vanilla we can make a sanitizer, simple but available to environment. Community Service want to tell us that we don’t have to spend money because we can just make the things we want.

    So I am very thankful because for somehow I am part of the Chem – Connect Project.

  12. CHEM-CONNECT help me to understand chemistry.
    Through Chem – Connect I learned a lot of things. It is useful to daily living and in my studies.
    We are thankful because Mr. Reyes chose us to be the student to conduct the Chem-Connect Project.
    We conduct scavenger hunt and community service.
    In community service we made sanitizer, charcoal paste, floam and gel. Sanitizer is only made of alovera, alcohol and vanilla. In just simple ingredients we can make a new product.
    Charcoal paste is only made of pounded charcoal and paste (cornstarch). We can do this at home because the ingredients are just basic.
    It helps people to earn money and to conserve ingredients. Every topic is discussed so I learn fast.

    That’s why I am thankful to be a student of Mr. Reyes because I learn and explore more.

  13. I would like to thank our chemistry teacher Mr. Ronaldo Reyes for having this kind of project. Based on my observation,student tends to forgot the practical application brought by lessons they've learned. Sir Reyes asked his students to conduct a community service wherein we should apply our learnings and put our visions into actions. This means,really this project help us open our mind to what learnings in school really meant for. Chem-Connect Project doesnt only help us (his students) but also we can share our learnings to the people in the community.

    After we have discussed the chem-connect,I've realized how chemistry really worked in our daily living. For
    example in the kitchen,ofcoures before doing any move,we must have any knowledge of the materials and indredients we are going to use. In this case ,the concept of polarity of substances are being ( napapaloob ) . I'll site another example, there are some cases that children and othet people become curious of any thing, like why insects float in water or why droplets of water become spherical in shape . The answer to this question can't easily be answered by people who do not take chemistry in there lives. This explains that there is something working on it ,this is what we call intermolecular forces wherein those forces are the weak forces. There are 3 kinds of weak forces namely ,london dispertion,dipole forces and the last one is the H-bond.

    Chemistry are all around. It just that,some people doesnt have any knowledge on how to work on it. Chemistry concepts really explains everything,though other may think that some cases are really hard to undetstand and impossible to explain.

  14. We,the hydrogen students of juniors from the proud school of tabaco national high school do serve in barangays in our city.I felt honored to serve in our city and to share information in the residents living in such place where we conducted
    the chem connect project lead by our chemistry teacher,Mr.Ronaldo C. Reyes.We encountered new faces of individuals there and had a great experienced there with them.We conducted an experiments such as mango shake,charcoal paste,hand sanitizer,tie dye,clay and so on.
    Those products we made are made of useful materials which can be found in our home.Instead of buying those and wasting high amount of money,why not just prepared those at our home.

    It is important for each of us to understand the significant of chemistry so through chem connect project we made,we share to the residents its significance.It is important in our life because it is everything in this whole world and whole universe.It helps to find out what living and nonliving things are made of and to learn how their properties relate to their compositions.It also studies how and why matter changes and accompany energy changes.Without chemistry,things we need to use in our daily lives--air,water,food,clothing,shelter,medicine,dwelling,telecommunications,transportation,fuel,and so on are also none.It has nade significant contributions in our society.

    By that chem connect project we had,I`ve learned many things which can also help us in our daily living.I`ve learned the importance of chemistry in our life,in our community,and to each of us.It was so overwhelming and such a good accomplishment in my own life to serve the residents in such place.

  15. Scientific literally does not only mean knowing terms and their definitions or memorizing facts. More importantly, it’s the concepts to deal the great challenge of life.
    Learning CHEMISTRY is not only an exercise of the mind. CHEMISTRY develops skills that you will find useful even outside the classroom- being critical thinker, decision maker, problem solver, and creative, used in our work and communication and social skills.
    Some students, as they hear the word CHEMISTRY, they find it boring. But they don’t know that CHEMISTRY is fun. CHEMISTRY is useful for our day to day activities. They don’t know that the fertilizers, machines, canned goods, and detergents, are some of what CHEMISTRY really helps. CHEMISTRY is a physical science that investigates the molecular reason for the process occurs on a macroscopic work, it’s meaning in words, but really CHEMISTRY is a part of our lives. It helps understand the real meaning of life. So, we should be thankful that we have CHEMISTRY.
    CHEMISTRY is a practical science with many practical applications. And because of Chemistry, we had manufactured the great variety of materials that we use in our home, schools, offices, farms, and factories. As a student, we can also apply chemistry in our home. We can tie dye, make fruit shakes and etc. Practical applications rally helps us because it can serves as an extra income, really enjoyable and we can share our learnings, in order, for other people, to learn the importance of CHEMISTRY.
    The test of real knowledge is when you use what you learned to promote better health, community life, as well as you apply your knowledge on chemistry to preserve and protect our environment.

  16. My Reflection-May Ann Wong
    What a great experience I ever had!! Promoting chemistry subject in a community is such a difficult thing to do and being a facilitator is such an honor and also a priviledge but through our chem.-connect project , It really feels amazing .I was very nervous at first but when we started the program I was very happy because there are many participants who are willing to listen to us for additional knowledge and learning .
    Chemistry facts and tricks were given to the participants .The importance of chemistry were discussed by the facilitator and practical application of chemistry were done and enjoyed by the participants such as making Alovera Gel, Charcoal which is three times longer than the ordinary one , floam and especially mango shake which can be apply or practice in the community that would help them to gain additional profit and money to sustain their daily living . It was really overwhelming knowing that your fellow kabarangays once lend their ears to you to acquire additional knowledge and also skills.Also considered magics but with scientific basis were introduced and through chem.-connect project many science specifically chemistry principle were explained, like the mixture of denatured alcohol and water which water comes first to avoid exothermic reaction and one participant was challenge to offer her money to be put on the said mixture and then burn it .The participants were really shocked and amazed because the money didn`t burn but with the knowledge of chemistry it was carefully explained that the process of combustion causing the money to become not flammable is responsible to it.
    Through our chem.-connect project , it gives me a clear understanding about chemistry which made me conclude that chemistry is such a difficult yet very exciting , enjoyable and interesting subject and it is not only a responsibility of every individual to study chemistry rather it gives them the skills and learning that made them to become conscious in everything around us which are mostly a product of chemistry and it gives me additional knowledge , skill , experience and learning. In this case , I should say CHEMISTRY tremendously make me feel alive and born again.

    Chemistry is the study of the properties of matter and the changes it undergoes.Compared with other subjects,chemistry is commonly perceived to be more difficult
    Chemistry is very useful to our daily lives.That's why I'm so glad that we had a CHEM.CONNECT PROJECT.
    with the help of our teacher,Mr.Ronaldo Reyes.With the help of this,I was able to understand and learned more about chemistry.How it affects our life and it's advantages or benefits to us.
    In chem.connect project,the topics are really discussed well.Just like the "Intramolecular Forces" wherein it explains about ionic and covalent bond.Also with the "Molecular Geometry" which shows the arrangements of atoms in a molecule. "Intermolecular Forces" also,which has 3 types:the london dispersion,dipole-dipole and hydrogen bond.Eventhough this words/phrases are new to me,I was able to understand then while discuss by our teacher.Not only that!It's amazing that we had a chem.connect project wherein we are promoting chemistry to our dear neighbors in our barangay.We taught them some practical applications on products like making toothpaste,charcoal,and hand sanitizer by just using such cheaper ingredients/materials for this.We enjoyed this kind of project given to us.
    Chemistry help us in any way.Like for knowing how a product was made and what properties of ingredients are used to make a particular product.Eventhough it's hard for me to learn about it very well after every discussion,I always try my best to understand chemistry............

  18. MY REFLECTIONS - Onin Vincent U. Borlasa


    First of all Im very thankful to our chemist teacher Mr.Ronaldo Reyes for sharing with us different ideas and applications about chemistry. These stuffs helped me and my family in our daily living. It made our lives somewhat better.This project is very wonderful because it does not only teaches you some chemistry ideas but it also teaches great values.


    Being a student, it is still difficult for me to have contact and conversation to other people. But then something knocked in my mind.It was the word "Sharing". This word powered me up to do a service.

    So we had a community service in barangay Cobo in Tabaco City together with Mrs. Aurea Biron in behalf of my chemist teacher Mr. Ronaldo Reyes. Mr. Ronaldo Reyes was out for an important matter.
    The service was great,fun and successful.We taught them how to make nutritious mango juice that can deliver them away from sickness.We also taught them how to make sanitizer out of natural substances. Im just happy because even in small things, I had shared something to other people that helped them in their daily living.


    Im encouraging everyone to love and learn chemistry because you'll get all the benefits in life. Believe me in... CHEMISTRY is LIFE. :))

  19. Reflection of Chemconnect Project
    Saturday, October 5, 2013, we had our 2nd community service in Tayhi Barangay Hall with our guide teacher, Mrs. Collantes. I think we had more than 15 members or facilitators including yours truly. We did again what we did last time in Pawa Barangay Hall with the same young chemists guided by our very own Chemistry teacher, Mr. Ronaldo Reyes. Since we had just the same practices or applications, I will just talk about some necessary accomplishments or problems. The first problem was about the hand sanitizer which was full of odor and the tie dye that the three of us – naming Andrie, Nicole and again yours truly – did. The design on the T-shirt was not seen because we forgot to tie the rubber bands tightly. However, as the program ended, we knew that somehow we did the chemconnect project successfully because the barangay captain made the chemconnect project their incoming contests for the feast of Pawa. Only those who participated in the chemconnect project were the only ones allowed to join the incoming contests. They have their proof. The certificates that were awarded to them. We also had pictures with the participants and the barangay officials. When it ended, we were given a thousand pesos as a treat of what we did. That’s it. In Tayhi, we also did the same procedures. Our participants were kids, children or little people unlike in Pawa that were mixed of old and young participants. That time in Tayhi, the kids were okay, they were eager to learn but they were noisy. It’s fun being with them. We ask questions after we had made our assigned application. Some were awarded or rewarded of the mango shake Patrick and Steven did because their answers were correct. We even asked the kids to name a chemist or a scientist they know. A very young boy answered Einstein and he got a mango shake from the two kuyas’. In contrast of the tie dye we made in our first community service, me and Nicole with the help of Cris, successfully made it. With the beautiful design called spiral. We were happy. The hand sanitizer was also good. We really succeed in our chemconnect project. Fortunately, later on, the Panal group joined us. For in their place, there were no participants who came not even the barangay officials. It’s okay and we warmly welcomed them and the kids wanted to learn more. The kids even tried everything or requested to have some of what we did. Like the ball made up of clay, floam and other ingredients. Also, the charcoal paste and their hands were filled of it. Overall, the chemconnect project was nice and a success. There was no money treat instead a snack treat.

    I feel so happy and excited when we start taking up the subject chemistry. I learn the every chemical that are present in all matters. Chemistry is useful to community, for us to determine if the food is toxic or non toxic. I can say if it is good to our body or not. And also I understand if why the periodic table has one, two or three letters in each square. It stands for the acronym in all elements. Because when I was a kid, I wonder why the periodic table’s letters are not the same as keyboard in the computer, but now I know why. Clearly--- it is not the keyboard I used to imagine when we were playing. Chemistry also helps me more, to understand if the other substance doesn’t mix to another substance, it is because of polarity.
    We had our community service in connection with our chem.-connect project. We all know that Chemistry has something to do with our daily lives. Our foods, things, water, but to cut it short Chemistry is all about matter. Our community service is very successful though only few participants were attended. We made clay that is made of flour, food coloring, water and egg. We made it because we want them to teach how to make clay so that, whenever children ask clay, they can easily make because the ingredients are cheap. Next we made toothpaste. Toothpaste is so useful for cleaning our teeth. It is made of baking powder, water, and flavoring. In baking powder, there is something on it that helps for cleaning and flavoring so it adds flavor, but the best flavoring is peppermint because you can feel the coldness and freshness of your breath. We made also tie dying t-shirt. Tie dye can help us in our daily life, simply but taking it as your business. We can earn money.

    Nonmetals bond to each other via covalent bonds while oppositely charged ions, such as metals and nonmetals, form ionic bonds. Compounds which contain polyatomic ions may have both ionic and covalent bonds.
    But, how do you know if a compound is ionic or covalent just by looking at a sample? This is where the properties of ionic and covalent compounds can be useful. Because there are exceptions, you need to look at several properties to determine whether a sample is ionic or covalent, but here are some characteristics to consider:
    • Most crystals are ionic compounds. This is because the ions in these compounds tend to stack into crystal lattices to balance between the attractive forces between opposite ions and the repulsive forces between like ions. Covalent or molecular compounds can exist as crystals, though. Examples include sugar crystals and diamond.
    • Ionic compounds tend to have higher melting and boiling points than covalent compounds.
    • Ionic compounds tend to be hard and brittle while covalent compounds tend to be softer and more flexible.
    • Ionic compounds conduct electricity when dissolved in water while covalent compounds typically don't. This is because covalent compounds dissolve into molecules while ionic compounds dissolve into ions, which can conduct charge.
    What are the properties of covalent compounds?
    1) Covalent compounds generally have much lower melting and boiling points than ionic compounds.
    2) Covalent compounds are soft and squishy (compared to ionic compounds, anyway).
    3) Covalent compounds tend to be more flammable than ionic compounds.
    4) Covalent compounds don't conduct electricity in water.

    Molecular Geometry-the bond lengths and angles, are determined experimentally. Lewis structures can give us an approximate measure of molecular bonding. There is a simple procedure that allows us to predict overall geometry is the VSEPR, Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion. The concept is that valence shell electron pairs are involved in bonding, and that these electron pairs will keep as far away from each other, due to electron-electron repulsion.

    When two groups try to get as far away from each other as possible, a linear shape is formed.

    When three electrons pairs get as far apart from each other, a trigonal planar structure is formed, as shown below.


    The bond angle in this structure is 120o.

    Four electron pairs form a tetrahedron when they are separated as far as possible from each other. The bond angle in a tetrahedron is 109.5o.


    Five electron pairs form a trigonal bipyramid when they are separated in space.


    This shape consists of a triangle with two electron pairs directly above and below it. The bond angles of the middle, triangular portion are 120o. The groups above and below the central triangle are at a 90o angle to the triangle.

    The Valence-shell electron-pair repulsion (VSEPR) Model is a model that states electron pairs in a molecule will be as far apart from one another as they can be because they repel each other. In a molecule that has two valence shell electron pairs the electrons tend to be on opposite sides of the central atom. If there are three electron pairs around the central atom they are in a trigonal planar shape. With four electron pairs the arrangement is called a tetrahedral arrangement. With five electron pairs the arrangement is called trigonal bipyramid. With six electron pairs the arrangement is called an octahedren.

  28. Having my studies in Tabaco National High School, over a thousand students enrolled, I ,Jason Barbante ,proud and honored to be a part of Chem-connect Project. Its a big opportunity, in helping ones improvement and gathering new knowledge ,a big responsibility in sharing ideas to others. For my many years existence, comes a time when we observed situations, for us impossible but for Chemistry, its possible. With the help of Chem-connect, we students became aware of happenings around the environment.
    The most appreciating part of this said project is the Promotion in the Community. By this, audience learn some practical applications which themselves can try for practical use. We perform many applications and the best product turns to be the homemade hand sanitizer. portrait some characteristics which a high quality sanitizer has. Why should we need to buy expensive one if we ,ourselves, can create a simple but effective product? ,the ingredients are easily found and it is easily made. And creating and inventing something is a big achievement to us, right?
    In summary, Chem.-connect is fun, awesome and challenging .Chem-connect is the key to Chemistry.   29. As a simple student of TNHS I am glad that I have been part of The CHEM-CONNECT project over the thousands of students that are also science enthusiasts. It is my honor to be part of it. Especially it helps not only me but everyone in our community. It's a big break for me, through this project I can render some of my time to help,educate, and give my service to my fellow countrymen.
    From the very start, our chem. teacher,sir Ronaldo Reyes, told us that we are having our CHEMISTRY Promotions in our community. Everyone was very excited and you can really see it it their faces during that time. Cause we are not going to learn but we are going to let them learn. It is a fulfillment to one's self to have an opportunity to share his knowledge through the years he earned inside the four corners of a classroom.
    In the most awaited part came. Yes, we had conducted our promotion in the community. I was so glad when the brgy. chairman of Pawa made an effort to continue what we've started in the said community. It means that we've succeded!
    To make this short, Chem-connect was a really great instrument not only to promote chemistry but to help our country men to be part and let them start a big move through themselves for a better and aware community.     This project had given us more than we've expected. We didn't just learn from it. We have appreciate the beauty and importance of chemistry to one's self. We did lot's of experiment, researches and teachings to help our community to be aware and be a wise user of the resources we have here on Earth. Chemistry is not just about science. It was born with the arts and mastery.

  33. Before we conduct the chem connect project, our Teacher,Mr. Ronaldo Reyes taught us about the importance of Chemistry and how we can apply it in our daily life. Using these knowledge, we learned that our life would be boring without Chemistry. The following are the importance of Chemistry in our daily life.

    Fireworks and explosions are based on chemistry, so it's definitely not a boring science. If you take classes in chemistry, you'll apply math and logic, which can make studying chemistry a challenge if you are weak in those areas. However, anyone can understand the basics of how things work... and that's the study of chemistry. In a nutshell, the importance of chemistry is that it explains the world around you.

    Cooking
    Chemistry explains how food changes as you cook it, how it rots, how to preserve food, how your body uses the food you eat, and how ingredients interact to make food.

    Cleaning
    Part of the importance of chemistry is it explains how cleaning works. You use chemistry to help decide what cleaner is best for dishes, laundry, yourself, and your home. You use chemistry when you use bleaches and disinfectants and even ordinary soap and water. How do they work? That's chemistry!

    Medicine
    You need to understand basic chemistry so you can understand how vitamins, supplements, and drugs can help or harm you. Part of the importance of chemistry lies in developing and testing new medical treatments and medicines.

    Environmental Issues
    Chemistry is at the heart of environmental issues. What makes one chemical a nutrient and another chemical a pollutant? How can you clean up the environment? What processes can produce the things you need without harming the environment?

    Chemistry has a reputation for being a complicated and boring science, but for the most part, that reputation is undeserved.

    Everyone can and should understand basic chemistry, but it may be important to take a course in chemistry or even make a career out of it. It's important to understand chemistry if you are studying any of the sciences because all of the sciences involve matter and the interactions between types of matter. Students wanting to become doctors, nurses, physicists, nutritionists, geologists, pharmacists, and (of course) chemists all study chemistry. You might want to make a career of chemistry because chemistry-related jobs are plentiful and high-paying.

  34. In Conducting Chem Connect Project ,,our teacher taught us about the different lessons that we tackled and things that are very important in our life. The things that can help us in living especially in earning some money. We tackled about Hydrogen bonds and Molecular Geometry not only its definition but also its importance.

    Hydrogen bonding useful in performing certain chemical reactions to make new products. For some starting materials and reactions, using a hydrogen-bonding solvent speeds up the reaction, while for others it slows it down. This has to do with how the products, reactants and chemical intermediates interact with the solvent. Hydrogen bonding solvents . Some of the most common solvents in an organic chemistry lab are water, methanol and ethanol.

    Molecular Geometry.............

    Molecular geometry or molecular structure is the three-dimensional arrangement of atoms within a molecule. It is important to be able to predict and understand the molecular structure of a molecule because many of the properties of a substance are determined by its geometry.

    The outermost electrons of an atom are its valence electrons. The valence electrons are the electrons that are most often involved in forming bonds and making molecules.

    One way to predict the way electrons within atoms will repel each other is to apply the VSEPR (valence-shell electron-pair repulsion) model. VSEPR can be used to determine a molecule's general geometry.

    There are many kinds of molecular Geometry,,the linear,trigonal planar,square planar,trigonal bi pyramidal,t-shape,bent etc.

  36. In our Chemistry Subject we study about the intermolecular forces.
    Intermolecular forces are forces of attraction or repulsion which act between neighboring particles (atoms, molecules or ions). They are weak compared to the intramolecular forces, the forces which keep a molecule together. For example, the covalent bond present within HCl molecules is much stronger than the forces present between the neighboring molecules, which exist when the molecules are sufficiently close to each other.

    Ok so all 3 of theses fit in a category called intermolecular forces; therefore, molecules are are interacting with other molecules.

    Ok so hydrogen bonding is the strongest intermolecular force and it only occurs when Hydrogen is bonded with a F, O or N. Such as HF or H2O. There is an attraction because of the partial negative and partial positive side in the molecule in which attracts with the other molecules partial charges. This is the strongest because it includes elements with the most electronegative.

    Dipole-Dipole forces only occur in molecules that are polar. Such as ICl. Since there is partial positive sides and partial negative side in the molecule them there is attraction between other molecule's partial charges.

    London dispersion forces are forces that occur only in molecules that are nonpolar such as CF4 or Cl2. This is the weakest force because there is no attraction between the molecules except for very quick instances when in the molecule there is more electrons on one side of the molecule than the other side.This causes another molecular to also have an imbalance in winch creates an attraction.

    Through this lesson,,i learned that there are many forces which keeps a molecule together. It help me to understand more about the attractions of molecules and how does some things formed.

    Physical Change
    - is a change affecting only its physical structure but not its chemical composition.
    Indicators of Physical Change

    - Sublimation - from solid to gas

    - Solidification - from liquid to solid
    - Melting - from solid to liquid
    - Condensation - from gas to liquid
    - Deposition - from gas to solid

    - Physical change only works on the intermolecular forces such as the London Dispersion Force, the Dipolar Forces and the Hydrogen Bond

    There are several differences between a physical and chemical change in matter or substances.

    A physical change in a substance doesn't change what the substance is. In a chemical change where there is a chemical reaction, a new substance is formed and energy is either given off or absorbed.

    When heat is given off in a chemical change or reaction, it is called an exothermic reaction. When heat is absorbed in a chemical change or reaction, it is called an endothermic reaction. The speed at which chemical reactions take place depend on the temperature pressure and how concentrated the substances involved in the chemical reaction are. Sometimes substances called catalysts are used to speed up or help along a chemical reaction. Light is helpful in the processing of film.

    Neutralization-is an example of decomposition reaction wherein the product is always salt and water.

    FACTORS AFFECTING THE RATE OF CHEMICAL REACTION
    1. Concentration
    *The higher the concentration, the faster the rate of the reaction
    More bubbles-more concentration
    Presence of more particles, there will be frequent collision of particles
    2. Temperature
    *The higher the temperature, the faster the reaction.
    Because the particles possesses higher kinetic energy, the particles will move faster which results to frequent collision of particles.
    3. Surface area
    *The greater the surface area, the faster the rate of reaction.
    Because the particles are scattered, it will collide.
    4. Catalyst- it speeds up a chemical reaction without consuming itself.
    This also lowers the activation energy of the reaction.
    5. Inhibitor- is a substance that slows down a chemical reaction

    1. Combination Reaction
    - two or more reactants unite to form a single product
    - A + B --> AB
    - Cu + S --> CuS
    2. Decomposition Reaction
    - single reactant is decomposed or broken down into two or more simple products
    - AB --> A + B
    - one example is the decomposition of sucrose or table sugar
    3.Single Replacement Reaction
    - a single free element replaces one element on the other reactant
    - A + BC ---> AC + B
    4.Double Displacement Reaction
    - involved the exchange of ions by two compounds to form two new different products
    - AB + CD ---> AD + BC
    - Neutralization is the common example. Neutralization is the reaction between a base and an acid.

    Factors Affecting a Reaction

    1.Concentration
    - Dilution - lowering a concentration of a substance by putting more solvent
    - the higher the concentration , the higher the rate of reaction
    2.Effect of Temperature
    - the higher the temperature , the higher the rate of reaction
    3.Surface Area
    - the greater the surface area , the higher the rate of reaction
    SURFACE AREA - the area exposed during a reaction
    4.Catalyst
    - speeds up a reaction without consuming itself
    - lowers the activation energy
    ACTIVATION ENERGY - minimum energy required to bring out a reaction
    5.Inhibitor
    - substance that slows down a chemical reaction
    - negative catalase
    - increase the activation energy

    1st is physical and chemical change

    The difference between a physical reaction and a chemical reaction is composition. In a chemical reaction, there is a change in the composition of the substances in question; in a physical change there is a difference in the appearance, smell, or simple display of a sample of matter without a change in composition. Although we call them physical "reactions," no reaction is actually occurring. In order for a reaction to take place, there must be a change in the elemental composition of the substance in question. Thus, we shall simply refer to physical "reactions" as physical changes from now on.

    Physical changes are limited to changes that result in a difference in display without changing the composition. Some common changes (but not limited to) are:

    Texture
    Color
    Temperature
    Shape
    Change of State (Boiling Point and Melting Point are significant factors in determining this change.)
    Physical properties include many other aspects of a substance. The following are (but not limited to) physical properties.

    Luster
    Malleability
    Ability to be drawn into a thin wire
    Density
    Viscosity
    Solubility
    Mass
    Volume

    Chemical changes, on the other hand, are quite different. A chemical change occurs when the substance's composition is changed. When bonds are broken and new ones are formed a chemical change occurs. The following are indicators of chemical changes:

    Change in Temperature
    Change in Color
    Noticeable Odor (after reaction has begun)
    Formation of a Precipitate
    Formation of Bubbles

    What is rate of reaction and how does it apply to
    chemical reactions?

    In a chemical reaction, how quickly or slowly reactants turn
    into products is called the rate of reaction. A reaction that
    takes a long time has a low reaction rate. A reaction that
    occurs quickly has a high reaction rate. A rate describes how
    quickly or slowly a change occurs. Every chemical reaction
    proceeds at a definite rate. However, you can speed up or
    slow down the rate of a chemical reaction.
    What factors affect the rate of a chemical reaction?

    The four main factors that affect the rate of chemical
    reactions are temperature, concentration, surface area, and the
    presence of a catalyst.
    1. Increasing the temperature causes the particles (atoms
    or molecules) of the reactants to move more quickly so that
    they collide with each other more frequently and with more
    energy. Thus, the higher the temperature, the greater the rate
    of reaction. If you decrease the temperature, the opposite
    effect occurs. The particles move more slowly, colliding
    less frequently and with less energy. In this case, the rate of
    reaction decreases.

    2. Concentration refers to how much solute is dissolved in
    a solution.
    If a greater concentration of reactant atoms and molecules
    is present, there is a greater chance that collisions will occur
    among them. More collisions mean a higher reaction rate.
    Thus, increasing the concentration of the reactants usually
    results in a higher reaction rate. At lower concentrations,
    there is less chance for collisions between particles. This
    means that decreasing the concentrations of the reactants
    results in a lower reaction rate.
    3. Surface area is the measure of how much area of an
    object is exposed.
    For the same mass, many small particles have a greater total
    surface area than one large particle. For example, steel wool
    has a larger surface area than a block of steel of the same
    mass. This allows oxygen molecules to collide with many
    more iron atoms per unit of time. The more surface contact
    between reactants, the higher the rate of reaction. The less
    surface contact, the lower the reaction rate.
    Surface area can also be important if a reaction occurs
    between two liquids that do not mix. In this case, the reaction
    occurs only at the boundary where the two liquids meet. It is
    also important to note that not all reactions depend on surface
    area. If both reactants are gases or liquids that mix together,
    then there is no surface, and surface area is not a factor.
    4. A catalyst is a substance that speeds up the rate of a
    chemical reaction without being used up in the reaction itself.
    Catalysts reduce the amount of energy required to break and
    form bonds during a chemical reaction. When catalysts are
    used, a reaction can proceed although less energy is added
    during the reaction. For example, enzymes are catalysts
    that allow chemical reactions to occur at relatively low
    temperatures within the body.
    The Mole Concept

    One example of a double displacement reaction is the reaction of lead (II) nitrate with potassium iodide to form lead (II) iodide and potassium nitrate:
    Pb(NO3)2 + 2 KI ---> PbI2 + 2 KNO3

    physical change- when a substance undergo a process its chemical composition doesnt change
    chemical change- its chemical composition changes and it cannot go back to its original phase

    How can we say that a substance undergo chemical change? Here are some indicators of chemical change:
    1. Formation of bubbles
    - when a water boils, can you say that it undergoes chemical change? No. Because when a water boils it undergoes a phase change which is evaporation. And this phase change is a physical change, formation of bubbles may be encountered in some sort of mixing substances

    2. Formation of precipitate
    * what is precipitate?
    - it is an insoluble gelatinous substance which is a product of chemical reaction

    Formation of precipitate takes place for example, your mother prepared you a milk and you forgot to drink it then you have noticed the next day that there is a substance floating in the milk.With that we can say that it is harmful to drink or taste.

    3. Emitition of foul odor
    When you cook a food, and that food last for two days, what do you expect to happen? Ofcoures spoilage of food. By smelling it you can tell if it is harmful to eat or taste.

    4. Release of gas
    when to two substances was mixed ,sometimes there is a release of gas which may be a product of chemical reaction it can decomposition or whatsoever.

    5. Production of electrical energy
    ex. light/battery

    6. Production of mechanical energy
    ex. explosion of dynamite


    Physical and chemical change takes a great part in our lives unknowingly. It occurs in the kitchen, garden, and in the house , specially in cleaning stuffs. We must know how to appreciate chemistry , it just not get our selves from ignorance but it can also help for our safety specially when we mixed substances.

During our lesson in chemistry which is a part of the chem-connect project, Mr. Ronaldo Reyes explained more and elaborated the difference between chemical and physical change and also the significance of learning this two important changes.My mind was refreshed that chemical change is a process by which a new substances are formed that have different properties and composition from the original material while physical changes involve changes in physical properties,such as size,shape and density,or changes in phase such as deposition-gas to solid,condensation-gas to liquid,sublimation-solid to gas also freezing and many more.

    In chemical change strong forces are broken or intramolecular forces are destroyed while in physical change the weak forces are destroyed which is intermolecular forces.


    This ideas helped me a lot in my daily life.

    For example the food i want to eat has bubbles and emits foul smell
    I have knew that this is an indicator of chemical change which can cause harm for me,
    so I can be more familiar in distinguishing harmful chemical changes.

    Physical change also contributes many good things to us.
    we can never enjoy halo halo or mais con yelo with out ice,
    which is a kind of physical change.

    I am glad that my knowledge about this topic become wide and deeper and know what are the uses of this to our daily life.I am hoping that I will still learn more and a lot of of things about chemistry and to our teacher.

  52. I learned several things in chemistry.

    Our Chemistry teacher Ron the chemist -Mr. Ronaldo Reyes taught us different applications in chemistry.

    One time he said that water is a chemical.
    And what flash in my mind is that water is dangerous because of the word (chemical).In my past schoolings,I already put in my mind that all chemicals are dangerous but because of our great chemist teacher, I learned that not all chemicals are dangerous infact their helpful to our daily lives.

    Our teacher also taught us kinds of dangerous mixtures.

    He told us several things that are commonly encountered in our daily living. Like in cleaning C.R., windows and others.

    Most important is the mixing stuff. He told us different chemicals that are very dangerous when mixed.


    For example: Muriatic acid + chlorox = hazardous substance/ dangerous
    House hold bleach + acid =chloroamine also dangerous

    In the first example, the effects are:
    watery itchy eyes
    iritate the throat
    burns the skin

    Second example:
    chest pain
    iritation to nose and eyes
    pneumonia
    and the most dangerous effect is that it may caused fluid in the lungs



    These things absolutely helped me in my daily living and Im glad of sharing these stuffs in my fellow friends.
    Im very thankful of being a part of this and Im also very thankful for the outstanding movements of my teacher

    1. I agree on that Onin . Not all chemicals are hazardous. Even Chlorine is a harmful gas but when it reacts with Sodium , it creates a very helpful substance which is the salt. Chemistry really is a very interesting subject , it makes harmful substance to be useful and vice versa.

  53. I learned several things thanks to our Chemistry Teacher Ronaldo Reyes - Ron the chemist


    I enjoyed our lesson in chemical and physical change. It is because our teacher let us know the kinds of physical and chemical change in the environment and in actual. In short, letting us do the experiment. Ive seen so many cool stuffs like burning of magnesium.Our teacher told us that magnesium is the main chemical component of fireworks. I had also seen other things like bubbling of the liquid in the test tube and then produces kinetic energy for the liquid inside to burst due to the chemical reactions. It is because the chemical wants to come out.


    I also learned the mole concept by Amadeo Avogadro. He said that the value of a single ion, molecule,atom or ion pair is equal to 6.02 x 10 to the 23rd power.


    Im so thankful to our chemist teacher.
    Honestly.. I learned so many things.

  56. My Reflection About Physical Change and Chemical Change

    In our elementary days, we learned that physical change doesn't change the appearance of an object while chemical change changes the appearance. But now that we are taking up Chemistry as our subject, my understanding on Chemistry became clearer and broader. With the help of our ever knowledgeable Chemistry teacher, Sir Ron Reyes, he let us do experiments and identify the changes that occurred in those substances. For our group, the Magnesium ribbon was placed inside the test tube with muriatic acid. We were amazed of what we have seen because the magnesium ribbon accumulated bubbles, produced a popping sound and after that, it overflowed. It is indeed a chemical change because of the accumulation of bubbles. Sir taught us that Mg is the main component of fireworks that's why it happened. There are many other experiments including the changing of color of the copper wire. Now I can add to the definition of physical change that it does not require changing the chemical composition of a substance but rearranges the molecules instead while chemical change changes the chemical composition of the substance as well as its internal structures.
    I want to thank Sir Ronaldo Reyes because he clearly explained and stated the difference between these two changes and let us discover it through actual means and he always think of a better way so that Chemistry will be loved by students.
    Chemistry really helped us to unravel the mysteries happening to the different substances we encounter in our day to day living. ^___^

    * 30 mL of vinegar
    *20 mL of vinegar+water
    *5 mL of vinegar+25 mL of water

    Well on the first container, there are more bubbles. On the next, has the lesser number of bubbles and the last has the least.
    Conclusion: the higher the concentration, the faster the rate of reaction.
    Reason: there’s the presence of particles so there’s a chance of frequent collision ofparticles.
    2. Temperature
    Example: (on container)
    *hot water
    *cold water
    *tap water
    The first container has more bubbles, the next has lesser and the last has the least.
    Conclusion: the higher the temperature, the faster the reaction.
    Reason: particles move faster and so they possess kinetic energy.
    3. Surface Area
    Example: (on beaker)
    *crushed antacid tablet
    *whole antacid tablet
    The first beaker,formation of precipitate. The next is formation of bubbles.
    Conclusion: the greater the surface area, the faster the rate of reaction.
    Reason: first beaker contains the scattered particles so they readily collide with other particles.
    4. Catalyst
    - Any substance that speeds up any reaction without consuming itself.
    - Lowers the activation energy of the reaction.
    5. Inhibitor
    - Slows down chemical reaction.
    - Negative catalyst
    Reflection:
    It's useful to be able to predict whether an action will affect the rate at which a chemical reaction proceeds. I consider this as an adventure wherein we are able to differentiate the speed of the reactions in a substance when we have experiments in school or in our home. It’s good that we have those factors because they will serve as our guide on how it affects the chemical reaction.

Your bond with each other can be broken if you don’t cherish or give important on things you need to manage.

    Physical change is a change in which the substance changes form but keeps its same chemical composition (reversible).
    *Changes of state are considered to be physical changes. Liquid water and ice (frozen water) are both the same substance, water.
    *If you fold a piece of paper it is a physical change. You have changed the form of the paper but you have not changed the fact that it is paper.
    *If you heat an iron bar until it glows red hot, it is still chemically the same iron. The iron has not changed into something else.
    *If you dissolve salt in water you have not changed the materials chemically. You still have salt and you still have water. This can be shown if you choose to separate the mixture by distillation or the simple evaporation of the water. The salt would be the residue and the water would be the distillate.
    Examples of Physical Changes
    • crumpling a sheet of paper
    • melting an ice cube
    • casting silver in a mold
    • breaking a bottle
    Change of State
    The change of state is likewise a physical change. In this scenario, one can observe a number of physical properties changing, such as viscosity and shape. As ice turns into water, it doesn't retain a solid shape and now becomes a viscous fluid.
    The physical "reaction" for the change of ice into liquid water is:
    H2O (s) → H2O (l)
    Ice Melting

    The following are the changes of state:
    Solid→Liquid Melting
    Liquid→Gas Vaporization
    Liquid→Solid Freezing
    Gas→Liquid Condensation
    Solid→Gas Sublimation
    If heat is added to a substance, such as in melting, vaporization, and sublimation, the process is endothermic. In this instance, heat is increasing the speed of the molecules causing them move faster.
    If heat is removed from a substance, such as in freezing and condensation, then process is exothermic. In this instance, heat is decreasing the speed of the molecules causing them move slower

    A chemical change is a change in which something new is formed (irreversible). The starting materials change into an entirely different substance or substances. This new substance has a different chemical composition than the starting materials. Examples of chemical changes would be the reaction of iron with air (rusting} or the reaction of a metal and acid.
    Certain observations will indicate that a chemical change has occurred.
    *The reaction produced a change in temperature. The temperature could go up (gets hotter) or the temperature could go down (gets colder). Note: reactions that produce heat are known as exothermic reactions whereas reactions that absorb heat are known as endothermic reactions.
    *Formation of gas bubbles.
    *Formation of a solid (precipitate).
    *A change in color. You may start with two colorless solutions but when they are mixed you might see a bright purple color.
    *Formation of a different odor. The starting materials may not smell at all but as you mix these materials you may end up with a bad odor or a pleasant one.
    Examples of Chemical Changes

    Indicators of chemical change:

    Change in Temperature
    A change in temperature is characteristic of a chemical change. During an experiment, one could dip a thermometer into a beaker or Erlenmeyer Flask to verify a temperature change. If temperature increases, as it does in most reactions, a chemical change is likely to be occurring. This is different from the physical temperature change. During a physical temperature change, one substance, such as water is being heated. However, in this case, one compound is mixed in with another, and these reactants produce a product. When the reactants are mixed, the temperature change caused by the reaction is an indicator of a chemical change.
    Violent Reaction (Fireworks) that has Heat as a Product
    Reaction: Fe2O3 + 2Al → 2Fe + Al2O3 + Heat
    Change in Color
    A change in color is also another characteristic of a chemical reaction taking place. For example, if one were to observe the rusting of metal over time, one would realized that the metal has changed color and turned orange. This change in color is evidence of a chemical reaction. However, one must be careful; sometimes a change in color is simply the mixing of two colors, but no real change in the composition of the substances in question.
    Metal Rusting
    The reaction above is that of the rusting of iron.

    When two or more compounds or elements are mixed and a scent or odor is present, a chemical reaction has taken place. For example, when an egg begins to smell, (a rotten egg) a chemical reaction has taken place. This is the result of a chemical decomposition.

    The formation of a precipitate may be one of the most common signs of a chemical reaction taking place. A precipitate is defined to be a solid that forms inside of a solution or another solid. Precipitates should not be confused with suspensions, which are solutions that are homogeneous fluids with particles floating about in them. For instance, when a soluble carbonate reacts with Barium, a Barium Carbonate precipitate can be observed.

    Formation of Bubbles
    The formation of bubbles, or rather a gas, is another indicator of a chemical reaction taking place. When bubbles form, a temperature change could also be taking place. Temperature change and formation of bubbles often occur together. For example, in the following image, one can see a gas spewing. This is the formation of a gas.

    However, most reactions are much more subtle. For instance, if the following reaction occurs, one may notice Carbon Dioxide bubbles forming. If there is enough Hydrochloric Acid, bubbles are visible. If there isn't, one can't readily notice the change.

    REFLECTION:
    The teachings of our Chemistry teacher helped me to identify a thing if it changes chemically or physically. The topic was already taken up during our elementary years but it was elaborated more when we discuss those in our chemistry class. Today, we are now aware of the indicators of chemical change wherein we are able to classify everything according to their purposes or uses. Through Mr Ronaldo Reyes, I gained informations that can be applied to my day to day activities.
    Chemistry is the basis of almost all science and benefits thereof, without chemistry we would not have many of the wonderful things we have access to today, like normal milk, its pasteurized by a process that requires basic knowledge of chemistry.

  61. We had a wonderful and meaningful discussion during our chem connect lesson.Our teacher gave hints and clues about the topic we are going to tackle about .After doing such,he started to explain briefly but clearly the types of chemical reaction .

    Those types are:

    Combination reaction that happens when two or more reactants unite to form a single product.

    representation:A+B---->AB

    And Decomposition reaction that occurs when a single reactant is decomposed or broken down into two or more simple product.

    representation:AB---->A+B

    Also Single replacement reaction that happens when a single free element is substituted for one of the element in the compound.

    representation:A+BC---->AC+B

    and the last is Double replacement reaction that involved the exchange of ions by two compounds to form two new different products

    After all of those explanation and elaboration we proceeded to the application.
    Mr.Reyes ask questions about the relation of the topic to our life.
    For instance,What would we prefer to undergo among those types of reaction,in case that this reactions can be true to our lives?

    Many shared their awesome thoughts and express their feelings about the given situation.
    Since the question was about love many of my classmates were exited and eager to participate.
    But majority prefer to undergo combination reaction,because it also defines loyalty and solidarity among couples.
    I have never thought that chemistry can jive or can be related to love.but during the lesson i have found out that chemistry can be applied in almost every thing.

    Mr.Reyes also shared his opinion and he would choose combination reaction ,because in life you will only choose one person whom you will react with until the end of time.



    Thats how chemistry help us to become more productive and better person.

  62. i love our discussion specially during activity time and experement.I like discovering inventing new substance.Eventhough we cant maake our experement well imean as perfect as the true pruduct but at least we triesd hard to do such things and make a wonderful product.I love our community service sir because we help other people and we learn. I am happy to see they are enjoying our presentation. They listen atentively to us. About the school service , ilove doing that.We went to other section to do an experement or to discuss about chemestry.   63. My Reflection about the Four Types of Chemical Reaction
    Chemistry lessons are indeed very relevant to real life situations. When we tackled about the four types of chemical reactions namely Combination, Decomposition, Single Replacement & Double Displacement Reaction, I realized it even more that we can really associate in real life.

    Four Types of Chemical Reaction
    + Combination- two or more elements produce a single product. Its formula is A+B-->AB.

    + Decomposition- a single reactant is decomposed or broken down to form new products. The formula for decomposition reaction is AB-->A+B.

    + Single Replacement- single free element is substituted for one of the elements in a compound. Its formula is A+BC-->B+AC.

    + Double Displacement- involves the exchange of ions by two compounds or reactants to form two different products. The formula is AB+CD-->AD+CB.

    Those are the new information I have learned from Sir Reyes when we had our ChemConnect discussion. As what I have said awhile ago, it is true to life. Why? Because we viewed a slide show of relationships of people in regards with the four types of chemical reaction. My classmates have commented on what reaction they would want if they happened to become a chemical reaction. For me, there is nothing wrong to what they have said because it shows that they, (including me) learned and understood another new & interesting lesson from Sir and from Chemistry about the Four Types of Chemical Reaction.

Chemistry is like a puzzle,at first difficult to analyse and difficult to understand but once you focus your atttention to it ,you will realise that it is very interesting.and enjoyable and you will find a hidden magic to it. That`s what I`ve learned in our chemistry period where there were many observers . I was very nervous at first but when the discussion begins ,it was fun, diffirent experiment were conducted and honestly I was a little bit confused about the substances and the kind of chemical reaction present in the reaction . My few fellow classmates disscused everything about what they observed and I I understand IT but when our dearet Sir Reyes disscused all about it but I was really amazed by the fact that there are hidden explanation about it and it gives me the clarity about the different kinds of chemical reactions.
    Through it ,I`ve learned also that it doesn`t only focuses on the subject alone but it can be also applied in our daily life such as in our relationship , if it is combination , decomposition and single or double replacement and I found it very thought-provoking
    In these I must say chemistry is fun , CHEMISTRY IS GREAT!

CHEMISTRY not only made a diffirence in the world we live in but also it made a difference in our life god had given.These are the words I want to emphasize to all which I`ve got in our chem-connect activity in our barangay..Definitely, I was very pressure and nervous cause there were many observers who are well-respected and smart , but when the seminar begins,it was like talking sincerely to one of my bestfriends on something which is very important to know.Me and my fellow classmates discussed all about its definition, importance and application in our daily life.In one of our experiments, our participants were amazed ,it was our tie dying experiment and of couse it was very overwhelming that they appreciated our effort.
    Mam Myrna Gonzales and Sir Reyes completely and comprehensively discused about the said project and of course the chemistry subject .Greatly it was really fun and very memorable cause it was one of my best experience I ever had.
    Through our chem-connect project it doesn`t only give me the knowledge and expeience but also it gives me the confidence to speak to other people and share with them my knowledge and skills .I was very thankful of course to Sir reyes .Tthese confidence I had is something that I owe to chemistry cause without it I can`t explore and express myself to other people .

  67. My reflection about physical and chemical change :)

    Before, I thought by simply studying chemistry, I can understand and explain all science phenomena, but no, im wrong because chemistry is continuous and it is an endless situation. As long as we live and until to death,there is chemistry. Chemistry is full of magic and it acts whether we like it or not.

    Children ask questions about their observations and ofcoures because of curiosity , and I can tell that's part of being a child because me myself experienced it and even nowadays ,still there's a lot of questions revolving in my mind.And maybe you too, am I right?

    There is a chemistry concept which is very easy to define and that is physical and chemical change. When we say physical change, when a substance undergo a process its chemical composition doesn't change while if it is chemical change, its chemical composition changed and it cannot turn back to its original composition.

    There are some cases where we are confused of those two changes that's why chemists made a conclusion about how we can say that is it physical or chemical change, there are indicators which made easier for us to classify any changes occured in the substance. For example, your mother prepared you a milk and you forgot to drink it. The next day you have noticed that there is something floating in the milk. We can conclude that the milk was already spoiled and it is bad to taste or drink. From that example the something that floats in the milk is called precipitate, one of the indicator. From this indicator it just not help us to classify a substance if it undergoes chemical change but also it acts to the safety of what we eat or drink.

    Chemistry can be found anywhere, in the kitchen, cleaning stuffs, outside the house and even in our body.

  68. Woah,seeing all these comments makes me believe that it's not only me that is having fun during our chemistry. THIS IS SO AMAZING.
    Well,for me,upon what i have learned from our various lessons,i found it so easy when it came to the topic on physical and chemical changes. All of us knows that we have taken this up back in our elementary times but it was more expanded in our chemistry or in our chem-connect project.

    When it came to the different types of chemical reactions,i found it so interesting especially when the time that we had our experiments on it and we were the ones who discovered it. I had so much fun that day. And when the time came that we have to share it to our community it was much more enjoying seeing the people learning something from us.

    here we can conclude that CHEMISTRY may be difficult at times yet becomes fun when there is already the application.

  69. My Reflection about factors affecting the rate of chemical reaction :)

    Are all reactions occur at the same time? No,because there are such factors affecting it.To those students who haven't discuss it yet, they will wander what are these factors are but because of Mr. Ronaldo Reyes, our chem teacher, he unlocked all our questions, he discuss the topic with all the willingness for us to understand it very well. From this lesson we just not learn and gather information but also it teaches us to put our knowledge into action. The lesson made us more practical of doing thing specially in household chores.

    When we washed clothes, what does we usually used in removing bad odor and stains? Bleach , right. But our mother teaches us to dilute it with water for what do you think is the reason? It is because the higher the concentration of bleach can result to decolorization of the clothes. Concentration of a substance affects the rate of chemical reaction. thats why we add water to make the reaction slow.

    There are other factors that we can relate to our day to day activities like temperature, surface area, catalyst, and inhibitor.

    Just like in our life there are factors also that makes our life meaningful and more magical. :)

  70. Have you seen your reflection in someone's eye? How tiny it appears! Just like observing tiny particles. Even it is small yet there are more conclusion to be made. We know that chemistry is a practical science with many practical applications that being applied in our lives and there is many things, either small or big undergo changes. Like silver to reddish-brown and iron rusts and this is a chemical change because it change its color. Also when we are cooking, rotting of food, chopping of onion is one example of chemical change and its evidence id the decomposition of organic matter.

    Learning chemistry is not to exercise your mind and there is a time to critically think to get the specifically terms for a situation. And i would like to thank Mr. Ronaldo Reyes in short Mr. Ron the chemist. Being a Chemist is difficult. You will learn many things, ideas and others when you are a chemist. I salute you sir! You gave effort on us everyday.

    You have a lesson on us and for me as a student. I've learn so many ideas which my great mind have advanced. When we inspired, the breath of life has been blown into us and it's easy to see what happens when we stop breathing: we inspire. Just like believing yourself that some thing that are impossible can be possible to do.

    I have learn so many things about factors affecting the rate of a chemical reaction like an experiment creating more bubbles is more concentrated and undergo faster reaction depending on the amount of substance and a kind of substance you will perform.. Another is an apple turns into brown when chopped because the oxygen react with the substance in the apple in the process of oxidation and the apple oxidized.

    Chemistry sometimes easy sometimes difficult yet enjoyable like when you will become a reaction, what type of reaction would you like to be? Many says that they would like to be a combination reaction because they want only one person to be part of their lives.

    Chemistry can be applied, combine and maybe you can make a contribution to society should you become a chemist someday.

  72. Chemistry has played a key role in determining the nature of the modern world. In reality chemistry is much interesting for both study and practice. While defining chemistry let us consider a traditional definition which states 'Chemistry is the science of matter which undergoes changes during chemical reaction'. But in reality chemistry goes beyond its traditional definitions. From the evolution of mankind itself, chemistry had a close connection with the daily acts of human beings. So we cannot deny the contribution of chemistry. Every matter is related to chemistry; even we human beings are made of chemicals.



    Almost all changes that we see around are means of chemical reactions. From the human evolution, he was much fascinated by the natural changes that he observed in his surroundings which include change in the colour of leaves, forest fire etc. Observation of how forest fire occurs led man to experiment himself and succeeded in making fire by striking two stones together. This might be the first human contact with chemistry.

  73. My Reflection About the Factors Affecting Rate of Chemical Reaction

    I would like first to enumerate the factors that affect the rate of chemical reaction which I have learned:

    + Concentration- the higher the concentration, the higher the rate of the reaction

    + Temperature- the higher the temperature, the faster the reaction

    + Surface Area- the greater the surface area, the faster the reaction

    + Catalyst- any substance that speeds up chemical reaction without consuming itself

    + Inhibitor- substance that slows down chemical reaction

    ---- > After explaining these new concepts thoroughly by Sir Ron Reyes during the Chem-connect discussion, I was again amazed on how Chemistry affects the things around because Chemistry without knowing, really makes a big difference/change to the substance it reacts upon. Like in the enzyme on papaya called papain, do you know that papain is the one responsible for softening the meat when we cook tinola? Because I learned that papain is a catalase that lowers the activation energy. Activation Energy by the way is the minimum energy required to start about a chemical reaction. It is important for the particles to collide to overcome enough the “energy barrier”. The inhibitor is the opposite of catalyst, which unlike catalyst; it slows down the chemical reaction. In other words, it is a negative catalyst. I know now that the higher number of particles there are, there comes frequent collision and if this is so, concentration process occurs. While high temperature can cause kinetic energy and the tendency is for the particles to move randomly in all direction. If there is a greater surface area, the particles can collide with each other because they are scattered.

    Well, those were again the brilliant lessons I have learned from our dearest “Chem-Master” Sir Ron Reyes.
    I hope you, upon reading this, at least bear in mind that Chemistry is not just about discussions. It is L I F E.

  74. My Reflection About the Mole Concept
    Mole- is the SI unit for the amount of substance present with an exponential form.
    We must be thankful for having this mole concept because without this, counting in large quantity or amount would be a really challenging task. The mole concept was discovered by Sir Amedeo Avogadro, an Italian scientist. Mole concept is also called as ‘’Avogadro’s mole”. Based on the mole concept, the amount of substance is 6 x 10 to the 23rd power. This makes counting in large quantities easier and not time-consuming .
    Examples :
    1 gross = 144 pcs.
    1 case = 24 pcs.
    1 ream = 500 pcs.
    The formula in getting the number of mole is :
    n = no.of mole
    N = Avogadro’s mole
    No. of particles divided by Avogadro’s mole

  75. Upon reading some of the reflections of my classmates,I've realized that I'am not the only one who enjoys having our chem.connect project...
    ahmmm...when we had our chem connect project..I really enjoyed performing such activities like going to a particular area which was assigned by our teacher for us to pick one material which undergoes a chemical reaction...for our group we were assigned to go to chapel near our room wherein we have chosen the rusting grills of the chapel as our example.Another one is the activity wherein we enjoyed looking for our partners in a chemical reaction and classify them in what type of chemical reaction it should be classify.
    I was so happy that I have learned another concept of chemistry..

    I am really happy to be part of this project. I love it! I learn so many things in this project, specially in application in real life situations. Physical and Chemical changes. All i knew is so little about it, but it was digged much more deeper about it. I really like doing first hands-on activities like experiments and exploring around the school campus. In such doings, we learn and have a sight on what it will be going to be the lesson. I also like relating the lesson to to our daily lives.

  78. When our teacher said our topic is about “The Types of Chemical Reaction”, the first question popped out in my mind, “there is?” I don’t really have any idea.
    Our teacher let us do our experiment about that topic. At first, I don’t really know if what the connection of that is. But as our teacher start discussing and explain further, a little bit, I understand. He explain about the combination reaction which is two or more reactants come together to form a single product (A + B → AB); the decomposition reaction which the reactants are separated into two different substance (AB→A + B); the single-replacement which one element replaces another element from its compound (A + BC → AC + B), and; double-replacement which is the exchanging of anions & cations ( AB + CD → AD + BC ).
    So that we can understand more, he played a video which is about the love relationships but related to the chemical reaction. There is the combination, the double-replacement, decomposition and single-replacement.
    I would just like to say thank you to Mr. Ronaldo Reyes, our Chemistry teacher for making the topic more interesting and understandable. My comment sir in the video clip, it must be the Hollywood star love teams (kidding), but it’s okay sir even though the persons in the video are not. :D I found it cute. I appreciate all your efforts.

  79. Physical and chemical change occur everywhere.
    In elementary science we already study about physical and chemical change but when we had the lesson about it in our chemistry, I fully understand the difference between the two.

    Physical change rearranges molecules but doesn’t affect the internal structure while chemical change affect the internal structure and it never be turn back to original form.
    Example of Physical change is turning water to ice. It only changes its phase but still its water.
    Example of Chemical change is burning of wood. When something is burned, it turns to ash and it can’t be turn to original form.

    Physical and chemical change, help every individual to make or create something different. Without these changes there would be no new materials or substances in our world.

  80. My Reflection- Physical and Chemical change
    When I was in elementary, we already discussed about the physical and chemical change. In short, we already had back ground about it. But for me, it is only few for us to understand such a complicated topic. There’s lot of question popping in my mind. But because of chemistry, I understand a lot of the changes around me.

    When we discussed it with Sir Reyes, he let us go to the different places in the school like the butterfly garden, around the school chapel, etc. for us to observe and identify what kind of change is that. Physical change is a change only on its physical appearance. But for chemical energy, there are lot of indicators; * production of electrical energy; * production of mechanical energy; * change in color; etc.

    After we observe, we go back to our room to report. The similar answer in chemical change is the rusting of iron bars ,and the physical change is the leaves that are already torn.
    As we discussed further about it, the topic for me is quite clear. I can’t say it so much clear for me and I don’t know why. But our discussion for me is very successful.

    About the lessons on the 3rd quarter. At first it is difficult to understand like the factors affecting chemical reaction but through Mr. Ronaldo Reyes, our Chemistry teacher, taught us patiently thoroughly for us to understand.
    I had enjoyed the lessons.
    Like the types of chemical reaction, it can be compared in our life. Our teacher used the human relationships as an example of the types of chemical reaction for us to understand more the lesson, and make it significant and meaningful. And I know it’s effective. We know that these days, relationships are trending especially in our generation.
    In the factors affecting the chemical reaction, our teacher let us experiment. Each group had different task to do and we must observe. Through the experiment and also our curiosity, we learned a lot.

    More about Chemical Change

    When two or more materials combine to make a new material, the new material has chemical properties that are different from the original materials.
    When you burn a piece of paper, you’ve added a fire to the original material, which changes the paper into ashes. This procedure cannot be reversed in order to change the ashes back into paper.
    When you mix vinegar and baking soda, you get a chemical reaction. The two materials combine together to make a new substance that cannot be separated to form its original parts. When take a bite of a pretzel, saliva from your mouth begins mixing with the pretzel in order to “break down” the pretzel for your body to digest.
    There may be clues that a chemical reaction took place, such as light, heat, color change, gas production, odor, or sound. The starting and ending materials of a physical change are the same, even though they may look different.

    Mole Concept

    We looked at reaction equations, balancing equations and we learned about different types of reactions that could take place. What went well was the calculating the moles.
    The introduction of the mole concept started by showing students a dozen of several items- a dozen of pencil, etc. Students can develop a general relationship between quantity and mass. I really like how few teachers drew 12 blocks and 12 paper clips to indicate the same quantity and showed how they may not necessarily have the same mass. ‘The mole’ is one of the fundamental concepts in quantitative chemistry.
    Importantly, the example of the mole concept raises the possibility that other significant scientific concepts might also be conceptualized differently in scientific and educational contexts.
    This opens up the whole question of the need to recognize the distinctive goals of the science classroom in comparison with the scientific laboratory.

    The simplest lesson in Chemistry made simpler through the efforts of our excellent Chemistry teacher, Mr. Ronaldo C. Reyes.
    Indeed, it has been fun learning this lesson for this envelopes the "heart" of chemistry which is to create new substances utilizing the existence of older ones. Take for instance sodium (Na) when added to chlorine(Cl) yields sodium chloride (NaCl) as its final product.
    And of course, I do believe that every lesson in Chemistry, or maybe in other subjects as well, have a significant relevant to our lives. For example, this chemical reaction.
    Let's say that we a chemical substance and the others as chemical substance as well.
    Sometimes, it just takes another person or a group of people to be introduced to us to discover and pave way for the emergence of something new in our lives.

    These two changes might be the most famous changes not only in the field of Chemistry but as well as in the field of Science.
    I can confidently say that these "changes" are tackled in the elementary years, specifically 5th and 6th grade.
    So, what's the fuss? We're now in third year and we definitely know the difference between the two.
    Over exposure to the topic plus discussing the overly exposed topic well results to mastery of the lesson.
    Just to share a piece of my wide knowledge about this topic, physical changes are changes affecting the form of a chemical substance, but not its chemical composition while chemical changes occur when a substance combines with another to form a new substance, called synthesis or, alternatively, decomposes into two or more different substances.
    So, I have nothing more to say but a sincere thank you to our mentor, Mr. Ronaldo C. Reyes for explaining this topic well.

    "Everyday,we encountered changes in matter,which involve energy changes.You cook food with the heat released from burning of kitchen fuel-wood,charcoal or liquefied petroleum gas.If you use an electric stove,electric energy is converted to heat,which is passed on to the food that is being cooked.The food we eat serves as the fuel for our body,enabling us to do all our daily activities and for our body organs to carry out their vital functions.Different types of food molecules have different energy contents."

    ■I find this topic easy and challenging because it is already taught in our elementary days.Physical change is defined as changes in physical properties without undergoing a change in the composition of the substance while chemical change undergoes change in its composition and new substance is formed.I really enjoyed this lesson because,with this knowledge,I am aware and alert of changes happening around the environment.And by this,I can tell and prove why something happen.Now,with the help of chem.-connect,I am less ignorant to something-possible or impossible.Congrats Sir!I truly appreciate this lesson. :D

    "Of the numerous chemical reactions occurring in and around us,a few major types emerges based on general patterns among them : Compounds decompose into elements,or elements combine or bond with one another to form compounds.In many reactions,the atoms or ions on different compounds switch bonding partners and form a new set of compounds."

    ■Chem-connect taught us the 4 types of chemical reaction.I found it hard at first because,I am confused either the compound undergo combination or decomposition.The same case at singe and double displacement.But,with the help of our chemistry teacher,he further explain these types of chemical reaction.And I got it perfectly.Or teacher also gave us patterns in order to classified these changes correctly.And,before we went to a next lesson,I trly learn and got how to named these reactions either combination,decomposition,single or double displacement.Thanks a lot sir! :P

  90. -Reflection about "MOLE CONCEPT"

    "In daily life,matter is measured either by counting or by weighing,whichever is convenient.For example,it is more convenient to count ballpens than to weight them.It is also more convenient to weigh rice than to count individual grains.Thus,to measure these quantities,we use counting units ( a dozen of ballpens) or molar units (a kilogram of rice).In chemistry,we often want to know the number of atoms,ions or molecules in a substance because these react with each other.However,these particles are too tiny to count individually,so a unit called MOLE is used to cont these particles by getting their mass."

    ■I found mole concepts moderate-not easy and not difficult.Sometimes it is easy especially when 1 mole is asked sinced we used avogadro's number.But when 2,3,4 moles are asked,OMG! It took me several seconds to compute.But,it is also enjoying because,it is like multiplying whole numbers.I have also problem in putting the correct placement of the decimal point and the exponent.But again,chem.-connect help one of us to be faster computers.Chem-connect taught us when to add or substract exponent.It also taught us to use atom if element is asked,ion if it is a charged atom,molecule if it is a molecular compound and ion pair if the substance is ionic.This topic is challenging to us students because it needs proper computation and correct chemical language.THUMBS UP Sir! 

    This topic in Chemistry is one of the nerve-wracking ones. Letting you memorize all the types of reaction and their corresponding process as to how to solve correctly a chemical equation will surely bring out the so called "nose bleed" in you. And I say this with all the sense of seriousness.
    Being an average student in Chemistry, it really is difficult for me to internalize and understand well this kind of topic. Nevertheless, we still have Mr. Ronaldo C. Reyes who teaches us with all the sense of enthusiasm and eagerness in making us understand lessons which perplexed us the most.

    "Reaction rate is measured in terms of the amount of reactants being used up or the amount of products being formed per unit time.We observed also,some reactions occur instantaneously,like an explosion and others occur very slowly,like the fading of paints.The rate of reaction may also vary depending on the prevailing conditions."

    ■Chem-connect taught us some factors which affect the rate of reaction.It also share to us concepts about delaying or speed up reaction.Our chemistry teacher specified conditions based on the factors affect the rate.By this,I am awared of factors which can affect a chemical reaction.And I can share this knowledge to others to help them understand rate of reaction.I truly learn many lessons and understand them obcourse by the help of our chemist-Sir Ronaldo Reyes.And through this knowledge,we can contribute to the society even if it is simple-NO ACT IS TOO SMALL.Who knows,maybe I will be a chemist too.  Good job Sir! :]

  93. Each and everyone of us don’t know what chemistry subject is when we are in our elementary days. Because it is quite difficult and student hate difficult subject. But when you turn 3rd year and met this subject, you can appreciate what this subject all about. With the help of our teacher Mr. Ronaldo Reyes which I can describe as a very intelligent teacher, he helps us to know what are the applications of our topic in our daily lives. And when he starts to introduce to us the chem-connect project which is the objective is to help not only us but the community itself.

    And now our topic is all about reaction. I knew that simply placing water in the fridge is a reaction. First I don’t believe that reaction which is a deep word just happen when you are just putting some water at the fridge. Well that is physical reaction. When you are lighting a candle, which is a combination of physical and chemical reaction. Because burning a match is chemical reaction also known as combustion and the melting which is the phase of matter. But don’t you know that not all reactions are good and can cause harm to your health? When some elements react with each other, like muriatic acid which is a toilet bowl and tile cleaner when combined with household bleach like zonrox (branded bleach) it can produce harmful gas and also known as chloramine which is a warm heat and can burn your skin and also cause some illness. And not only that, there are more reactions happens in our environment whether it’s good or bad, we must learn how to use and apply this anytime and anywhere.

    Have you seen your reflection in someone's eyes?How tiny it appears?You can saw tiny particles but to be proven.And that is because of our chemistry teacher,MR. RONALDO REYES, or Ron the chemist for short.He inspire us in every word he says because when we are inspired,the breath .of life has been blown into us and it's easy to see what happens when we stop breathing : we inspire so,don’t stop believing yourself.We can do such impossible things.Just like a product that also expired but because of our great mind we know how to used it in other ways and how to preserve those things.

    Many things undergo changes that sometimes we amazed for example,silver to reddish brown when iron rusts,it is chemical change and it affects its color.And this would because of the power inside our mind that we can specifically concludes the things happening/changing in our community.

    In our lesson about FACTORS AFFECTING THE RATE OF A CHEMICAL REACTION,I have learn that a simple things or experiment has a further explanation that sometimes we don't get the most specific tems.We know that chemistry is a practical science with many practical applications.And as you learn more,you may conclde that even though it is difficult sometimes yet more enjoyable everytime.

    What would happen to Chemistry and chemists as well, if this concept have not been discovered? Perhaps, computing for the amount of the product in a single chemical reaction would take them eons just to arrive at their final answer.
    Take note that the mole is the chemist's "dozen". If we are to compare this in the English "tools", this would be probably be the collective noun for in the same manner, they take into account the concept of taking a group as one which simplifies things for us.

    In our everyday lives, these chemical reactions are very common to our naked eyes. You can see them anywhere. There is one here, one there and so forth.
    Take for instance the rusting of a metal bar. In this example, a chemical reaction is observed. Once oxygen (O2) is added to iron(Fe), it produces IronOxide(Fe2O) commonly known as rusting iron.
    This, I have to say, is one of the simplest lessons taught in our Chemistry class for what we need to do is simply observing with a pinch of thinking.

    Before the formal discussion of this topic, I got terrified by all the numbers that I see. All the conversion factors that I met. And I said to myself “Will I be able to pass this topic?”
    Then here came Mr. Reyes. He looks so confident in front before discussing the topic so he caught my attention. I listened to him well then…BOOM! The topic was just peanuts! It just needs simple analysis of data and a piece of fast-pace thinking to arrive at the final answer.
    I realized that in Chemistry, no topic is unbearable only if you listen to the mentor. Or just like in any other fields of study, all you have to do is to pay attention to get the “meat” of the topic.

    This is the topic that would actually pop-out your nerves in the brain; such a complex topic! In order for an average student to understand this well, he/she needs to glue his/her on the teacher while the discussion is ongoing and of course, he/she needs to read more about this topic.
    Frankly speaking, I dedicated a night just to fully understand this one-of-a-kind lesson. And of course, I listened to our teacher with all the sense of determination to get the topic well. Good thing, Sir Reyes was very patient in answering all the questions thrown to him as to regards to this topic.
    We really are lucky to have a mentor like Mr. Reyes. Understanding, considerate and above all, a superb Chemistry teacher.

    As what my classmate said, these two changes have been overly discussed since these things have been taught when we were still in elementary. And considering the fact that until now, this topic has been “played again the cassette”, we MUST have mastered its “lyrics”.
    Anyway, just to show my wide understanding this topic, let me give an example of these two changes.
    To start with, I’ll give an example of physical change.
    *Molding a clay into a different shape/form.
    For chemical change, spoiling of food is a perfect example.

    All I can say is that this is an easy topic. You simply have to remember the five factors that affects the rate of reaction and how each is related to the reaction itself. For example, temperature is directly proportional to the rate of reaction which means that once you increase the temperature, the faster the rate of reaction will be. And if you decrease the temperature, the rate of reaction will slow down.
    If we are to relate this topic to our lives, there surely exists a strong relevance between the two. Just like the rate of reaction, there are some factors that hastens or slows it down; and so with our lives. Sometimes, there are things that make us happy which enables us to move in a lively or fast-paced manner. And sometimes, there are things that will surely make our day gloomy which demoralizes us, thus giving us a slower motion.

    Physical and Chemical Changes

    Again and again, this topic has been discussed starting in our elementary years which exists ‘til now. So, there’s actually no reason why a III-Hydrogen student wouldn’t master this topic.
    So in order for me to show my great understanding on this topic, I’ll simply differentiate the difference that exists between a physical and a chemical change.
    In a physical change, the outside or physical composition of material is the only thing that is altered. For example, you carved a wood then made it into a furniture. This exhibits a physical change since what has been changed is the external appearance of the wood. Its chemical composition remained to be constant despite of the changes physically.
    On the other hand, a chemical change is a kind of change where the chemical composition of a substance or material is altered which may at times lead to a physical change. For instance, a rotting apple. Do you think this apple would rot if its chemical composition has not been changed? Of course not. But since its chemical composition has been altered, it rotted which led to the changing of color as well of the apple.

    Have you ever heard of factors affecting the change of this? Of that? And whatsoever? Well, I presume you have at least hear one…or several I should say.
    If others do have factors which affect their well-being, and so with chemical reactions. What differs only is the qualitative measure as to how these factors affect the object. If what affects a person’s well-being are his/her environment, people surrounding him/her and many more, what affects the rate of chemical reaction are the following:
    1.) Concentration
    2.) Temperature
    3.) Surface Area
    4.) Inhibitor
    5.) Catalyst
    Take note that each factor affects the rate of reaction differently. For instance, increasing the surface area increases as well the rate of reaction. Decreasing such would also decrease the rate of reaction.

    They say that this is one of the most difficult topics in Chemistry…Well, I slightly agree with them but not a hundred percent approval to their regards as “super difficult”.
    In contrary to their experiences about this topic, I find this one interesting since you really have to use your sixth sense (common sense) here. Determining as to if a compound has undergone a decomposition really brings out the power of your brain.
    And of course, this topic would never be more interesting if not because of the effort made by our teacher, Mr. Ronaldo Reyes. He still presented a video clip to help us understand more the lesson despite of the very typical classroom discussion he has made.

    First of all, I would like to extend my gratitude to our very inspiring Chemistry teacher, Mr. Ronaldo Reyes for letting us understand complex topics like this.
    Honestly, I thought Chemistry was all about computations which terrify me the most. I admit that I’m not that good when it comes to numbers. But all of a sudden, when I met Chemistry partnered with a very good mentor, that vision of mine has changed.
    Having learned that the Mole Concept is mostly computation, never did I anymore get this fear of numbers. I approached this lesson with all the sense of excitement and happiness for I do believe that the mind works best if we are happy and inspired.
    So the most awaited day came---the discussion of the Mole Concept. At first, it puzzled me. I still didn’t get that time how to manipulate the Avogadro’s number which made an obstacle in my computation. I also didn’t get that time the proper cancellation of units. But that was my first approach back then. Little by little, aided by constant practice, I was able to freely compute the problem without the aid of a teacher or a seatmate. I was overwhelmed back then.

    PHYSICAL & CHEMICAL CHANGE
    Physical and chemical changes occur everywhere. Physical changes do not affect its chemical composition while chemical changes affect its chemical composition and produces a new substance.
    I learned from our chemistry lesson the changes that happen in a substance, the physical and chemical change. Physical change has something to do with the change of size and shape, while chemical change changes in color, temperature and odor. It also produces gas, bubbles and precipitates. These six are the indicators of chemical change. The phase change like sublimation evaporation and etc. belongs to physical change because it does not affect its chemical composition and can be return to its original form. I also learned that boiling is a physical change. At first I saw bubbles when boiling so I concluded it that it belongs to chemical change but my teacher said it belongs to physical change. He said that when boiling, evaporation occur which is a phase change. He also said that not all substances that produce the indicators of chemical change really undergo chemical change.
    Now, I’m aware of concluding whether a substance undergoes physical or chemical change.

    FOUR TYPES OF CHEMICAL REACTION
    In our chemistry lesson, I learned something about four types of chemical reaction. The four types of chemical reaction are combination, decomposition, single displacement, double replacement reaction. In combination, it is in the form A+B-->AB while decomposition is in the form AB-->A+B. In single reaction, it is in the form A+BC-->AC+B while in double replacement reaction, it is in the form AB+CD-->AD+CB. One very good example of double replacement reaction is neutralization. Neutralization reaction occurs when acid reacts with base and they produce water and salt.
    Because of this knowledge, I can determine what product will the substance produces when they react. I can also classify it whether combination, decomposition, single displacement, or double replacement reaction.

When I was a child I had never thought that simple things like adding papaya when cooking meat specially when it is tinola,left over foods are placed in the ref,preparing milk,pulverizing pepper before using it for cooking,using salt when preserving foods .I am just saying to myself that they are practiced because they are need to be done, and because every one of us does it naturally, without any reasons or any explanations.But now I have learned the reasons behind it.During our chemistry I had learned that this things are classified as the factors affecting chemical reaction.like adding papaya when cooking tinola,papaya is added not just only to enhance the taste of it, but because papaya contains an enzyme and that is papain, which is a catalyst that speeds up chemical reaction.The other given examples above also have scientific explanations.when preparing milk it has something to do with concentration because milk is diluted by adding more solvent which is the water,pulverizing pepper has something to do with surface area,salt is being use to preserve food because it serves as an inhibitor or the negative catalyst,and the last is when foods are placed on the refrigerator the factor that affect the chemical reaction is the temperature.

    Now that I had learned them with the help of our chemistry teacher I realized that chemistry had a big part to our lives.

  122. Chemistry! When one heard this, the very first expression is: “Its hard!”. Yes, but we all know that Chemistry tackles everything. So, it is very important to all of us. Since Chemistry tackles everything, it means even the smallest and microscopic atom is included. That’s why the Mole concept is also discussed. Mole is an SI unit for the amount of substance. The Avogadro’s number which is 6.02x10^23 is very important to determine the amount of substance. The significance of this lesson is that it helps us know how to compute for the number of moles in a certain ion pair, atom and molecule. That’s all. Thanks Sir RonRey…..

  123. The 3rd quarter is indeed a great period for we had learned again new concepts and knowledge about Chemistry. Here are some of the topics discussed. We started the period with the Chemical bonding which has two kinds: the ionic and covalent. These were applied to the community by the Chem-Connect Project wherein we performed some simple experiments which can be used for our daily lives. Another topic discussed by Sir RonRey was the Application of Chemical Reaction which includes the dangerous mixtures like household bleach, ammonia etc. This Application of Chem. Reaction was then shared by us to other sections for the students to be aware of the things and dangerous mixtures around them. Last is the Redox Reaction or the Oxidation-Reduction. In this lesson, we learned how to determine the oxidized/reduced substance and the reducing/oxidizing agent. Examples were given to us to determine easier. In the examples, we are to compute for the oxidationnumber of each element in an uncombined state which should result to 0(zero). To sum up, we only have to remember the acronym OIL RIG which means *Oxidation Is Lost of e- and *Reduction Is Gain of e-. That’s all! Looking forward for another grading period .     Factors affecting rate of reaction(reflection)
    I have learned that there are five factors affecting rate of chemical reaction.
    They are concentration, temperature, surface tension, catalyst, and inhibitor. There is also an energy barrier called activaton energy which is the minimum energy required to bring about a chemical reaction.
    In the first factor, the higher the concentration, the faster the rate of the reaction. There arealso particles formed and the greater the particles, the higher the possibility to have frequent collision of particles.
    For the second factor, the higher the temperature the faster the chemical reaction and there’s always the presence of kinetic energy so particles move randomly.
    For the third factor, the greater the surface area the faster the rate of chemical reaction. And since particles are scattered, they can readily collide with other particles easily.
    For the fourth factor, catalyst is any substance that speeds up a chemical reaction without consuming itself. In a papaya, it softens the meat in tinola or in any dish. Lastly, the fifth factor is the inhibitor known as any substance that reduces or slows down a chemical reaction. It’s also called negative catalyst. An example of this is calamansi. It increases the activation energy.
    I am happy of what I learned. Now I can identify what factor would affect a certain chemical reaction and I can also share it to others.

    The formula to get the molar mass of a substance is:

    Mass in grams= no. of moles x molar mass

    or simply n(MM)

    stoichiometry is a brach of chemistry that deals with the study of relative quantity of product and reactant.



    These things helped me a lot to solve several problems without asking help of my classmates.
    I learned to work alone facing long problems and numbery variables. Now Im still on the listen to my chemist teacher to learn more things and share it to others.     1.) Atomic fission anticipated (2 Peter 3:10-12). Scripture states that "the elements will melt with fervent heat" when the earth and the heavens are "dissolved" by fire. Today we understand that if the elements of the atom are loosed, there would be an enormous release of heat and energy (radiation).

    2.) Strong and weak nuclear force explained (Colossians 1:17;Hebrews 1:3). Physicists do not understand what binds the atom's nucleus together. Yet, the Bible states that "all things consist" - or are held together by the Creator - Jesus Christ

    3.) Air has weight (Job 28:25). It was once thought that air was weightless. Yet 4,000 years ago Job declared that God established "a weight for the wind." In recent years, meteorologists have calculated that the average thunderstorm holds thousands of tons of rain. To carry this load, air must have mass.

    4.) Olive oil and wine useful on wounds (Luke 10:34). Jesus told of a Samaritan man, who when he came upon a wounded traveler, he bandaged him - pouring upon his wounds olive oil and wine. Today we know that wine contains ethyl alcohol and traces of methyl alcohol. Both are good disinfectants. Olive oil is also a good disinfectant, as well as a skin moisturizer, protector, and soothing lotion. This is common knowledge to us today. However, did you know that during the Middle Ages and right up till the early 20th century, millions died because they did not know to treat and protect open wounds?

    5.) Life is more than matter and energy (Genesis 2:7; Job 12:7-10). We know that if a creature is denied air it dies. Even though its body may be perfectly intact, and air and energy are reintroduced to spark life, the body remains dead. Scripture agrees with the observable evidence when it states that only God can give the breath of life. Life cannot be explained by raw materials, time, and chance alone - as evolutionists would lead us to believe.

Since alchemy is partly magical and partly empirical because of its purpose such as to transform metals to Gold , to discover the elixir of life and the philosopher`s stone some information in history tells us that it helped in the discovery of the elements.

    In c.770 , Abu Musa Jabir Ibn Hayyan is arab/persian alchemist "who is considered by many as the father of chemistry had developed an early experimental method for chemistry and he also isolated numerous acids such as the HCl , nitric acid , acetic acid , tartaric acid and aqua regia.He also analyzed each classical element in term of four basic qualities ( fire ( both hot and dry) , earth ( both dry and cold ) water ( cold and moist )
    air ( hot and moist ).

    In c.1000 , Abu al-Rayhan al-Biruni and Avicenna refuse the practice of alchemy and the thoery of the transmutation of metals .


    According to this , alchemy really helps Chemistry in a way different from alchemy itself.

    1. The fact that air has weight was proven scientifically only about 300 years ago. The relative weights of air and water are needed for the efficient functioning of the world’s hydrologic cycle, which in turn sustains life on the earth.

    “When He imparted weight to the wind and meted out the waters by measure.” [Job 28:25]

    2. Science has discovered that stars emit radio waves, which are received on earth as a high pitch.

    "When the morning stars sang together..." [Job 38:7]

    3. The Bible describes the circulation of the atmosphere, and includes some principles of fluid dynamics.

    “The wind goes toward the south, and turns around to the north; The wind whirls about continually, And comes again on its circuit.” [Ecclesiastes 1:6]

    4. Conservation of mass-energy is exactly what we would expect on the basis of Scripture. First, the Bible indicates that no new material can come into existence. This is indicated in John 1:3 and Genesis 2:2. John 1:3 states that all things were made by God, and nothing has come into existence apart from Him.

    5. The laws of physics and chemistry are examples of these ordinances of heaven and earth. The clockwork precision of the planets as they orbit the sun is due to their strict obedience to God’s ordinances. The stars and planets are never late nor are they early. They do not fail to appear in their proper place at the proper time (Isaiah 40:26).

    1.Niels Bohr was a (Jew) Danish physicist who made fundamental contributions to understanding atomic structure and quantum mechanics. He received the Nobel Prize for Physics for this work in 1922. Bohr published his model of atomic structure in 1913, introducing the theory of electrons traveling in orbits around the atom's nucleus, the chemical properties of the element being largely determined by the number of electrons in the outer orbits. According to Bohr new level or orbit starts with 2.n square.
    For First level: 2.1.1 =2 electrons
    For Second level 2.2.2= 8 electrons
    For Third level 2.3.3 =18 electrons
    We see similar pattern in Bible too.
    First level = 2 people (Adam and Eve)
    Second level = 8 people (Noah, his wife, three sons and three daughter-in- laws)
    Third level = 18 people (Jacob, his 4 wives, 12 sons and 1daughter) A new race Israel.

    2.The Bible in Genesis 1:1-5 says that there was darkness in the beginning and God created light in the first day. We can interpret this situation in mathematics by giving 0 to explain darkness and 1 to explain light as absence of light is darkness. And this system of mathematics is called Binary system.
    In Binary system :

    The chemical element number 7 is the Nitrogen. The Nitrogen has three single electron(111) in its three P-orbital's.
    This Nitrogen is not reactive even though it has three single electrons. Hydrogen has a single electron in its s-orbital and Oxygen has 2 single electron in its outer p-orbital and these two elements are very
    reactive.
    The mysterious inactivity of Nitrogen indicates that God was inactive on the seventh day.

    3.If we go backward under current time scale, approximately 15 billion years ago, the entirety of our universe was compressed into the confines of an atomic nucleus or to a single point. Known as a singularity, this is the moment before creation when space and time did not exist. According to the prevailing cosmological models that explain our universe BEGIN WITH a great explosion (SOUND), trillions of degrees in temperature on any measurement scale, that was infinitely dense, created not only fundamental subatomic particles and thus matter and energy but space and time itself.

    For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

    When we look to Eden Garden we can see that the sin was committed on the tree. As the tree was in the center of Garden, it should be a big tree for survival from other trees. Now we can see that Jesus also died on a tree. Before Jesus, Socrates was killed by drinking a cup of poison. Beheading was also common on those days. Stoned to death was also a option before the Jews. But Jesus was killed on the tree because he had to fulfill ALL the laws including the laws of nature.

Any physical situation can be described by length, mass, and time. These are all known as dimensions.
    Of course dimensions are of no use without a magnitude being attached. We must know more than that something has a length. It must also have a standardized unit - such as a meter, a foot, a yard etc. Dimensions are properties which can be measured. Units are the standard elements we use to quantify these dimensions. In dimensional analysis we are only concerned with the nature of the dimension i.e. its quality not its quantity. The following common abbreviation is used:

    The average kinetic energy (KE) of gas particles is proportional to the temperature in Kelvin. Energy is related to force, so as long as the temperature is above 0 K gases have force (only in theory, since most gases have condensed already at relatively higher temperature) that would cause pressure if made to collide (contact)with some surface. Pressure is force per unit area.
    The “how” and “why” of Influence
    Forces, no matter how great or big in magnitude, could not result in pressure without contact. A body could only feel the pressure if there is contact. Lesson? Avoid contact if you don’t want the pressure it would produce.

    5. Strong and Weak Acids (and Bases)
    Acids are acidic because of their abilities to release protons (H+) in solution. The more protons they can release relative to their number the more acidic they are. Some acids release their protons completely; they are considered strong acids. Those that give up their protons only partially are weak acids. The extent to which the acids are giving up their protons is related to how weak or strong their affinity on them.
    “For when I am weak, then I am strong.”
    Strong acids are strong because their hold on the protons is so weak. Weak acids are weak because they’re holding the protons too tightly. In God’s sight, those who think they are strong (the self-sufficient) are actually weak; but those who recognize and acknowledge their weakness are made strong. “But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong” 1 Cor. 1:27.

    1.The Bible suggests the presence of nuclear processes like those we associate with nuclear weaponry. This is certainly not something that could have been explained in 67 AD using known scientific principles (when Peter wrote the following verse).

    2. The television is a practical (if not always worthwhile smile ) device that uses electromagnetic waves (which transmit its video signal). The Bible contains passages that describe something like television—something that allows everyone on earth see a single event. (Note: such passages typically refer to the end of time. It may not be long before all of us learn for sure whether the Bible is true or not.)

Numbers 31:21-23 (NIV)”. These are the metals of the Bible. They were used, among other things, to build and decorate the Temple.

    Gold and Silver were for ornaments and signified riches and treasure, Gold being the more valuable metal. They were also used to create sacred vessels, to cover and decorate the Ark of the Covenant and to cast idols.

    Bronze, an alloy of Copper and Tin, was also used ornamentally but, because of its greater strength, was used where Gold or Silver could not, such as in weapons and the structural bases of the Tabernacle. It was also used in larger pieces, such as the altar and the bronze basin for washing.

    1.(Ezekiel 16:47). He took some of the seeds and put it in a fertile soil. He planted it like willow by abundant water, and it sprouted and became a low, spreading vine. So, it became a vine and produced branches and put out leafy boughs."

    Soil is the main source of nutrients and minerals for the plants. It also protects the plants from not getting uprooted.


    2.The Ark (Exodus 36:3). Bezalel made the ark of acacia wood-two and a half cubits long. He overlayed it with pure gold both inside and out and made gold moldings around it.

    Gold is a chemical element with the symbol Au and atomic number 79. It is a dense, soft, malleable, and ductile metal with an attractive, bright yellow color and luster that is maintained without tarnishing in air or water. Chemically, gold is a transition metal and a group 11 element. It is one of the least reactive chemical elements, and is solid under standard conditions. The metal therefore occurs often in free elemental (native) form, as nuggets or grains, in rocks, in veins and in alluvial deposits. Less commonly, it occurs in minerals as gold compounds, such as with tellurium as calaverite, sylvanite, or krennerite.

    3.The grain offering(Leviticus). " If you a grain offering baked in an oven, it is consist of fine flour; cakes made without yeast and mixed with oil or wafers made without yeast and spread with oil."

    Using yeast is rather inconvenient - it can be dead already or if the yeast is submerged in too hot water it can die and also waiting for yeast to work to let it gas-fill the pastry before baking is also not that convenient. Looks like the baking powder is more convenient - it can be stored for ages, can be mixed with hot water, baking can be started immediately after mixing the pastry.

    4.The death of Jesus (John 19:25). Jesus said, "I'm thirsty." A jar of vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of hyssop plant and lifted it to Jesus's lips.

    Vinegar has many chemical properties on the basis of which we can study it. The pH of vinegar is about 2.4, which tells us that it is highly acidic. The density of vinegar is about 1.01 gm/ml, almost as much as water.It is also known as the "Acetic acid." It's chemical formula is C2H4O2.

    5.The earth was designed for biological life (Isaiah 45:18). Scientists have discovered that the most fundamental characteristics of our earth and cosmos are so finely tuned that if just one of them were even slightly different, life as we know it couldn’t exist. This is called the Anthropic Principle and it agrees with the Bible which states that God formed the earth to be inhabited.

    The order and design of the seemingly insignificant matter is amazing. If God has a wonderful design for atoms so small, surely He got a much more wonderful design for the lives of His beloved children! Remember the sparrows. (Luke 12:6, 7)
    Each element is unique—in shape, size, mass, properties or behavior, and usefulness. We need to understand that in God’s big family we don’t have to be uniform in traits, temperaments, talents or usefulness. But as atoms of different elements consistently do each of their assigned tasks, we too can do our duty, no matter how small or grand, for His glory. In God’s field, no assignment is insignificant; all is important.
    Atoms and Atomic Structures
    The modern atomic theory tells of an atom with indistinct boundaries but with elaborate internal architecture of subatomic particles. Atoms are so small that a line 1 cm across is equivalent to 100 million atoms wide. The nucleus is incredibly dense: it occupies only 1 ten-trillionth of the atom’s volume but contributes 99.97% of its mass. A nucleus the size of a period on this page would weigh about 100 tons. The electrons around nucleus act as particles and wave. They move fast but are not colliding, much like planets around the sun.

    *The grain offering(Leviticus). " If you a grain offering baked in an oven, it is consist of fine flour; cakes made without yeast and mixed with oil or wafers made without yeast and spread with oil."

    Using yeast is rather inconvenient - it can be dead already or if the yeast is submerged in too hot water it can die and also waiting for yeast to work to let it gas-fill the pastry before baking is also not that convenient. Looks like the baking powder is more convenient - it can be stored for ages, can be mixed with hot water, baking can be started immediately after mixing the pastry.

    *The earth was designed for biological life (Isaiah 45:18). Scientists have discovered that the most fundamental characteristics of our earth and cosmos are so finely tuned that if just one of them were even slightly different, life as we know it couldn’t exist. This is called the Anthropic Principle and it agrees with the Bible which states that God formed the earth to be inhabited.

    *.(Ezekiel 16:47). He took some of the seeds and put it in a fertile soil. He planted it like willow by abundant water, and it sprouted and became a low, spreading vine. So, it became a vine and produced branches and put out leafy boughs."

    Soil is the main source of nutrients and minerals for the plants. It also protects the plants from not getting uprooted.

    *The death of Jesus (John 19:25). Jesus said, "I'm thirsty." A jar of vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of hyssop plant and lifted it to Jesus's lips.

    Vinegar has many chemical properties on the basis of which we can study it. The pH of vinegar is about 2.4, which tells us that it is highly acidic. The density of vinegar is about 1.01 gm/ml, almost as much as water.It is also known as the "Acetic acid." It's chemical formula is C2H4O2.

    *The Ark (Exodus 36:3). Bezalel made the ark of acacia wood-two and a half cubits long. He overlayed it with pure gold both inside and out and made gold moldings around it.

    Gold is a chemical element with the symbol Au and atomic number 79. It is a dense, soft, malleable, and ductile metal with an attractive, bright yellow color and luster that is maintained without tarnishing in air or water. Chemically, gold is a transition metal and a group 11 element. It is one of the least reactive chemical elements, and is solid under standard conditions. The metal therefore occurs often in free elemental (native) form, as nuggets or grains, in rocks, in veins and in alluvial deposits. Less commonly, it occurs in minerals as gold compounds, such as with tellurium as calaverite, sylvanite, or krennerite.

    1. Joshua 4:21-23
    He said to the Israelites “in their fathers, what do these stones mean? Tell them’ Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground’. For the lord your god dried up the Jordan before you until you had crossed over. The lord your god did to the Jordan just what he had done to the red sea, when he dried it up before us until we crossed over.

    Chemistry principle: Evaporation. Evaporation is an essential part of the water cycle. The sun (solar energy) drives evaporation of water from oceans, lakes, moisture in the soil, and other sources of water. Evaporation is a type of vaporization of a liquid that occurs from the surface of a liquid into a gaseous phase that is not saturated with the evaporating substance.

    2.Daniel 2:40 and 43
    Finally, there will be a fourth kingdom, strong as iron—for iron breaks and smashes everything- and as iron breaks things to pieces so it will be crashed and break all the others. And just as you saw the iron mixed with the baked clay, so the people will be a mixture and will not remain united anymore than iron mixes with clay.

    Chemistry principle: Element Iron. Ancient Egyptian iron objects have been dated to around 3500 B.C. These objects also contain approximately 8% nickel showing the iron may have originally been part of a meteorite. The "Iron Age" began around 1500 B.C. when the Hittites of Asia Minor began to smelt iron ore and make iron tools. Iron is the 4th most abundant element in the Earth's crust. The Earth's core is believed to be comprised primarily of iron. Pure iron is chemically reactive and corrodes rapidly, especially in moist air or at elevated temperatures.

    3.Mathew 14:25-26
    During the fourth watch of the night, Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking in the lake, they were terrified “it’s a ghost”. They said and cried out in fear.

    Chemistry principle: Surface tension is a contractive tendency of the surface of a liquid that allows it to resist an external force. Surface tension is an important property that markedly influences the ecosystem. Surface tension is exposed, for example, any time an object or insect (e.g.water striders) that is denser than water is able to float or run along the water surface. At liquid-air interfaces, surface tension results from the greater attraction of water molecules to each other (due to cohesion) than to air (due to adhesion). The net effect is an inward force at its surface that causes water to behave as if its surface were covered with a stretched elastic membrane. Because of the relatively high attraction of water molecules for each other, water has a high surface tension (72.8 millinewtons per meter at 20°C) compared to that of most other liquids. Surface tension is an important factor in the phenomenon of capillarity.
    Surface tension has the dimension of force per unit length, or of energy per unit area. The two are equivalent—but when referring to energy per unit of area, people use the term surface energy—which is a more general term in the sense that it applies also to solids and not just liquids.
    In materials science, surface tension is used for either surface stress or surface free energy.

    Chemistry Principle: The laws of chemistry give different properties to the various elements (each made of one type of atom) and compounds (made up of two or more types of atoms that are bonded together) in the universe. For example, when given sufficient activation energy, the lightest element (hydrogen) will react with oxygen to form water. Water itself has some interesting properties, such as the ability to hold an unusually large amount of heat energy. When frozen, water forms crystals with six-sided symmetry (which is why snowflakes are generally six-sided). Contrast this with salt (sodium chloride) crystals, which tend to form cubes. It is the six-fold symmetry of water ice that causes “holes” in its crystal, making it less dense than its own liquid. That’s why ice floats in water (whereas essentially all other frozen compounds sink in their own liquid).

    5.Mark 9:1-13
    we see Jesus with Moses and Elijah, thus indicating the 8th group. The 8th group has 3 elements: Iron, Cobalt, and Nickel. Iron isthe cornerstone of the Periodic Table; it is the last element formed by the cooling process, and it is the most stable element in the universe. So, in this 8th group, nickel is numbered as 008, cobalt as 080, and iron as 800. In the book of Revelation 1:8, Jesus says, "I am the Alpha and the Omega." Numerical value for alpha is 1, and numerical value for omega is 800.Element 1 (Hydrogen)shows trinity , 1 element in three places, and Element 800 (Iron)shows three elements in one place, thus making trinity a mysterious concept.

    4.) Strong and Weak Acids (and Bases)
    Acids are acidic because of their abilities to release protons (H+) in solution. The more protons they can release relative to their number the more acidic they are. Some acids release their protons completely; they are considered strong acids. Those that give up their protons only partially are weak acids. The extent to which the acids are giving up their protons is related to how weak or strong their affinity on them.
    “For when I am weak, then I am strong.”
    Strong acids are strong because their hold on the protons is so weak. Weak acids are weak because they’re holding the protons too tightly. In God’s sight, those who think they are strong (the self-sufficient) are actually weak; but those who recognize and acknowledge their weakness are made strong. “But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong” 1 Cor. 1:27.

    Faith Integration: A Study of Chemistry and Faith IntertwinE
    An atom is a submicroscopic particle, is considered the building block of all matter, and is the smallest unit in an element. One characteristic of atoms not many people know about is that atoms are never destroyed; instead, they are continually recycled. The atomic theory worldview states that anything living matter does can be explained by the characteristics of atoms. All living things are made of atoms, which means that everything they do can be explained through physics and the properties of atoms. Many people find this worldview disappointing and leaving much to be desired in the purpose of human lives. For others, the idea isn't disturbing, just scientifically interesting. This worldview can significantly impact the way a person thinks about the world and themselves.

    I can partially agree with some aspects of this worldview. It is only speaking of our physical bodies, and as Christians we know that it is not our physical bodies but our minds and souls that truly matter. Therefore, this worldview doesn't negate the purpose of our lives, as that comes from our spiritual and emotional selves rather than our physical selves. Instead it actually enhances our purpose, as the identical characteristics of our atoms provide a common bond between humans because we can identify with and relate to others. This worldview also helps us to see the amazingly intricate structure God used when creating the universe, down to the smallest details of atoms.

    However, in some ways I do not agree with this worldview. Some people, including most scientists, believe that chemicals and hormones control everything in our bodies, including how we think and what we feel. It has been proven that chemicals and hormones do play some part in this; for example, adrenaline and endorphins are both linked to what moods a person feels. However, chemicals and hormones do not completely control our moods and thoughts. If they did, then we would just be empty husks when we died; when our neurons stopped firing, our ability to believe in God would also shut down. As we know from the Bible, people are still very much alive after death, albeit in a different way than before. There would be no soul if our thought processes and the things that make us unique just came from atoms; we would be the same as plants and other animals. Also, if only chemicals determined our characteristics, identical twins would be exactly the same, as they have the same DNA. However, even if identical twins have grown up in the same situation, they often have different characters. This would not be possible if we are completely made up of atoms in body, mind, and soul.

    While our physical bodies can be explained through the physical aspects of atoms, we will never be able to fully scientifically explain the mind or the soul. The atomic theory worldview works well when applied to the physical aspects of living things, and in some cases it can also be applied to the way the mind works. However, it should not stop us from having a purpose in life. It also should not make us worry about what will happen after our death. Instead, we should use it to help us enjoy and understand God's creation even more. The Bible states that those who accept Christ as their Savior will be in heaven for eternity. While we can't be certain that our atoms will come with us, we can be at peace in the knowledge of that biblical truth.

    Atoms and Atomic Structures
    The modern atomic theory tells of an atom with indistinct boundaries but with elaborate internal architecture of subatomic particles. Atoms are so small that a line 1 cm across is equivalent to 100 million atoms wide. The nucleus is incredibly dense: it occupies only 1 ten-trillionth of the atom’s volume but contributes 99.97% of its mass. A nucleus the size of a period on this page would weigh about 100 tons. The electrons around nucleus act as particles and wave. They move fast but are not colliding, much like planets around the sun.
    Distinctiveness, Order, and Design
    The order and design of the seemingly insignificant matter is amazing. If God has a wonderful design for atoms so small, surely He got a much more wonderful design for the lives of His beloved children! Remember the sparrows. (Luke 12:6, 7)
    Each element is unique—in shape, size, mass, properties or behaviour, and usefulness. We need to understand that in God’s big family we don’t have to be uniform in traits, temperaments, talents or usefulness. But as atoms of different elements consistently do each of their assigned tasks, we too can do our duty, no matter how small or grand, for His glory. In God’s field, no assignment is insignificant; all is important.

    The groups and periods in the periodic table tell of its amazing and predictable arrangement.
    Importance of the Bible to a Christian
    What the periodic table is to a chemist the Bible is to a Christian (and much more).
    Everything in nature has a pattern. Our God is a God of order, not of confusion.
    Effects of Radiation; Radioactive Detection and Measurement
    Sin and its Consequences
    There are things that we can’t see that are destroying us. And sin is the most pernicious.
    Even things that can’t be seen or felt by our senses can be recognized through its short-term or long-term effects.
    Reactivity of Elements, Octet Rule, Electronic Configuration
    The closer the elements to a noble gas configuration (stable form), the more reactive they become (the metals and non-metals alike).
    Waiting is—guess what? Not easy!
    One very important observation: It seems that the desire to be stable is innate in nature; that the closer nature is to the state of stability the more impatient (reactive) it becomes. Be patient, you are almost there. Learn to wait just a little longer.
    Discovery of radioactivity
    Serendipity—that’s how the French physicist Henri Becquerel discovered the radioactivity phenomenon.
    Chances—don’t depend on them.
    Chances happen to everyone. But the ones who usually profit from them are the ones who don’t depend or rely on them but those who are prepared for them. Lesson? Don’t leave your life to chances!
    Conversion of Units
    When converting one unit to another, the value with the old unit is multiplied to a conversion factor. Although not numerically equal to 1, conversion factors have values always equal to 1.
    True Conversion
    In conversion of units, the “undesirable” needs “1” (that is the conversion factor which has a value of one) to turn it into the “desirable.” In the process the unit is changed but the value stays the same. Likewise, the value of the converted and unconverted person before the One is the same. But when the unconverted meets the One and the undesirable traits are changed into desirable ones, that’s when true conversion happens.
    Scientific Notation
    “Scientific notation is a way of writing numbers that accommodates values too large or small to be conveniently written in standard decimal notation.”[5]
    Trust and Faith
    No matter how big or small a number is, it can be properly handled by scientific notation. If this is true to numbers, then I believe this is also true with all our cares. “He’s big enough to rule this mighty universe, yet small enough to live within my heart,” says a song.

  146. We are given an advance project by our Chemist teacher Mr. Ron Reyes to find some concept in the bible specifically in the Christian bible related to chemistry.

    I am a server of God . And i serve him by the means of being a "Sakristan" . Too bad for me that Ive been forgetting to serve God in some of his days. My absence is due to the always required participation in class and some activities that needs my participation and contribution as well. But God told me by reading his words in the bible that this things are not reasons to be excused. If there's a will, there's a way he said.

    Now about the concept, Our teacher told us to find concepts related to chemistry. Any concepts related to chemistry. The concept needed is not specified , it is just said that the concept should be related to chem.

    Science proves Creation and the authenticity of the Bible in a myriad of ways. The Periodic Table of Elements, for example, is one of the aspects of Science that confirms the legitimacy of the Bible.The universe is made up of elements and story of universe is the story of theelements.The Earth is made up of 89 elements. These 89 elements were classified byMendeleev, a Russian chemist, around 150 years ago, as the Periodic Table.The first chapter of Genesis correlates with the Periodic Table. The story of universe is the story of elements, which is ultimately the story of creation.In the periodic table, there are groups and periods; in the bible, there aredays. On the first day of creation, according to Genesis 1:2, it is written thatthe Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. Hydrogen, the first elementof the universe, the first element of the first period, and whose atomicnumber is one, imitates that motion. Hydrogen has only 1 electron. Sohydrogen can donate electrons like the first group elements, or it can shareelectrons like the fourth group elements, or it can accept electrons like theseventh group elements. In this way, one element can be placed in threedifferent positions, showing the relationship of one God in three persons.On the first day, God created light and water according to Genesis 1:3.Similarly, in the first group, there is sodium, and when sodium comes incontact with water, sound and light are produced. As wealready know, the 2nd day is shown by groups 2a and 3a, so the 3rd day will be shown by Group 4a. Group 4a has carbon, the backbone of all plants. Weall burn dry trees because trees contain carbon. Magnesium, which is foundin the third period, is the central element of chlorophyll. And it ischlorophyll which gives plants the green color.In Genesis1:14, the fourth day, God created sun, moon, and stars. Thecorresponding group for 4th day is Group 5a. This group contains phosphorus, a shining element.On the fifth day, as said in Genesis 1:20, God created birds of the air andfish of the sea. The next group (Group 6a) includes oxygen, the elementneeded for life.

  147. CHEMISTRY CONCEPTS IN THE BIBLE

    1.Our bodies are made from the dust of the ground (Genesis 2:7; 3:19). Scientists have discovered that the human body is comprised of some 28 base and trace elements - all of which are found in the earth.


    2.Origin of the rainbow explained (Genesis 9:13-16). Prior to the Flood there was a different environment on the earth (Genesis 2:5-6). After the Flood, God set His rainbow "in the cloud" as a sign that He would never again judge the earth by water. Meteorologists now understand that a rainbow is formed when the sun shines through water droplets - which act as a prism - separating white light into its color spectrum.


    3.Vast fossil deposits anticipated (Genesis 7). When plants and animals die they decompose rapidly. Yet billions of life forms around the globe have been preserved as fossils. Geologists now know that fossils only form if there is rapid deposition of life buried away from scavengers and bacteria. This agrees exactly with what the Bible says occurred during the global Flood.


    4.Hydrological cycle described (Ecclesiastes 1:7; Jeremiah 10:13; Amos 9:6). Four thousand years ago the Bible declared that God "draws up drops of water, which distill as rain from the mist, which the clouds drop down and pour abundantly on man" (Job 36:27-28). The ancients observed mighty rivers flowing into the ocean, but they could not conceive why the sea level never rose. Though they observed rainfall, they had only quaint theories as to its origin. Meteorologists now understand that the hydrological cycle consists of evaporation, atmospheric transportation, distillation, and precipitation.


    5. The Bible says that light can be sent, and then manifest itself in speech (Job 38:35). We now know that radio waves and light waves are two forms of the same thing - electromagnetic waves. Therefore, radio waves are a form of light. Today, using radio transmitters, we can send "lightnings" which indeed speak when they arrive.
